M ultiple Chinese universities with ties to the defense sector are reportedly seeking access to Nvidia's NVDA advanced H200 chips, which are the most powerful AI processors permitted for sale in China. This news highlights the ongoing interest in Nvidia's technology, particularly in sectors that are under scrutiny due to geopolitical tensions.
The recent interest from Chinese universities, including Beihang University and Northwestern Polytechnical University, in Nvidia's H200 chips underscores the growing demand for advanced AI technology in the defense sector. These institutions are part of the elite “Seven Sons of National Defense” and are currently blacklisted by the U.S. Commerce Department due to their involvement in military advancements. This situation raises concerns about the implications of technology transfer and the potential for military applications of AI, particularly as over 25 universities and labs are identified as either using or attempting to acquire older Nvidia chips.
