NYC plans to install anti-OD ‘life alert’ devices in apartments to connect drug users to 911

Mayor Eric Adams’ administration is planning to install “life alert” devices in apartments to help drug users avoid dying from an overdose — in another taxpayer-funded reform critics say encourages substance abuse.

The city Health Department intends to award a contract for a pilot program targeting residents considered a “high risk” to overdose, officials told The Post.

The controversial contract will go to Lifeguard Digital Health, Inc., which manufactures a device called Lifeguard Lite — a wall-mounted physical timer that can be activated by residents for self-monitoring of drug use.

Before injecting drugs, a resident who is alone can set the timer for up to six minutes.

After it goes off, residents have the option to either extend the timer by one minute at a time, or hit the “I’m OK” button to disable it.

If the drug user doesn’t respond, LifeguardLite sounds a loud alarm and sends an alert to building staff to go check on the resident.

If no one turns off the alarm after checking, the device calls 911 directly, so city medics can respond to a potential overdose and administer naloxone.

The device also monitors room temperature.

Conservative Party chairman Gerard Kassar said city health officials should be helping addicts kick the habit completely rather than condoning or enabling drug use.

“Can you imagine Alcoholic Anonymous coming up with a program that allowed you to drink booze?” Kassar said. “This is using taxpayer resources to allow drug use. It’s a continuation of drug injection sites.”

But Health Department officials said Lifeguard Lite will be used on a trial basis with drug users at high risk for a fatal overdose — an experiment worth trying because OD deaths have surged more than 75% since 2019, largest because of abuse of potent fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine.

“Our focus at the Department of Health is to save lives. The Administration has committed to exploring innovative tools – like this pilot program – to reduce the number of overdose deaths in New York City by 25 percent by 2030,” an agency spokesman said.

“Lifeguard Lite has been installed in supportive housing units in other jurisdictions and has proven to successfully avert overdose deaths by ensuring that this simple life-saving intervention can be delivered in a timely manner.”

The city has two overdose prevention centers in East Harlem and Washington — known as “safe” drug injection sites  — where addicts can bring their own drugs and use clean needles to shoot up under the watch of medical professionals.

The controversial monitoring program has been credited with preventing more than 1,000 overdoses and the mayor backs the expansion of them.

The Lifeguard Lite monitoring system is being used in British Columbia, Canada.

“When placed in social housing environments (including Single Room Occupancy buildings (SROs), public restrooms, safe injection sites), LifeguardLite™ protects individuals who use drugs alone by alerting a customized admin dashboard in case of an emergency,” LifeGuard Digital Health says on its website.

IDF obliterates massive Hamas tunnel network snaking beneath Gaza

The IDF has leveled a mile-long section of one of the largest known Hamas tunnel networks snaking beneath the Gaza Strip, officials said.

Members of the elite Yahalom unit and combat engineers with the 162nd Division detonated a large portion of a more than 7-mile-long tunnel located in central Gaza, the IDF said Sunday.

Dramatic video shows the moment the trigger is pulled, causing a mile-long plume of smoke to erupt out of the ground as the tunnel system caves in.

The destroyed section was used to connect Hamas’ military forces and served as an underground crossing route between northern and southern Gaza, according to the IDF.

The complete 7.5-mile-long tunnel system dwarfs the previous largest tunnel discovered in December near the Erez Crossing, which measured at about 2.5 miles.

It took about three months for the IDF to announce that it had completed the destruction of the 2.5 mile long tunnel, which was blown up and sealed with concrete.

It remains unclear how long it would take the IDF to completely demolish and seal off the 7.5-mile-long tunnel in central Gaza.

The IDF estimates that it has destroyed about 40% of Hamas terror tunnels, about double what US officials have estimated.

Along with the demolition operations, the IDF has decimated Hamas’ tunnel system through airstrikes and using water from the Mediterranean Sea to flood the corridors.

Sunday’s operation came as the IDF’s Nahal Brigade took out 18 Hamas gunmen in central Gaza on Saturday following battles with snipers, tanks and airstrikes, according to the Israeli military.

I’m Putting Together a Group to Buy TikTok, Details Coming

How soon? As soon as Elon Musk joins my group and provides details. More seriously, let’s discuss the misguided legislation.

Steven Mnuchin’s Consortium

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he is putting together a consortium to buy TikTok after the House passed a bill that would ban TikTok in the U.S., or force its sale to a non-Chinese owner.

In other news, China is putting together a consortium to buy Boeing and pledges to solve all of Boeing’s many problems.

I just made up that last sentence, but is there any doubt China would do so if the US would allow the sale?

In this case, here’s the important question: Would China allow the sale of TikTok to the US when the US won’t allows the sale of nearly anything to foreigners?

So, what’s the point of consortiums, if there is no chance the aim can ever happen. Nonetheless, if Musk calls, I will answer the phone. It would likely be a fun call.

Let’s step back from all these what if’s, to discuss where we are.

House Passes Bill to Ban TikTok or Force Sale of the Chinese Video App

The Wall Street Journal reports House Passes Bill to Ban TikTok or Force Sale of the Chinese Video App

The House voted overwhelmingly to approve a bill on Wednesday that would ban TikTok from operating in the U.S. or force a sale, setting the stage for a final showdown in the Senate, where lawmakers signaled a more cautious approach on the legislation.

The measure passed 352 to 65, with one member voting present, showing broad bipartisan support for cracking down on the app. The vote moved Congress closer to an unprecedented ban of one of the most popular apps in the U.S., with lawmakers balancing national-security worries with concerns about freedom of speech, the impact on TikTok users and creators, and misgivings about interfering with a company’s business operations.

“TikTok cannot continue to operate in the United States under its current ownership structure,” said Rep. Mike Gallagher (R., Wis.) who wrote the bill with the White House and Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D., Ill.).

Opponents of the bill—who ranged from the left’s Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D., N.Y.) to the right’s Marjorie Taylor Greene (R., Ga.)—aired concerns that the legislation was rushed and voiced reservations about bills limiting what information Americans could see. TikTok said it views the legislation as an effective ban because separating the U.S. portion of its app through a sale or divestment wouldn’t be practical. Some lawmakers were sympathetic to that view.

“Creatives, artists, content creators and businesses in my district will get caught in the crossfire of this bill and deserve better than federal overreach as a substitute for a thoughtful solution to a complicated national-security challenge,” said Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D., Calif.).

Et Tu, Scott Adams?

Wow. I wouldn’t have guessed that.

Poorly Thought Out

The TikTok ban is about as well thought out as would be a Chinese proposal to buy Boeing, Nvidia, or Apple.

Sen. Rand Paul (R., Ky.), who opposes the legislation, said the House bill “dictated an unrealistic and narrow path for divestment, effectively banning TikTok and ignoring its substantial investments in data security.”

I side with the extremely odd group of AOC, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Rand Paul, and Elon Musk.

What’s This Really About?

The US claims it’s a security measure aimed at China specifically. Why then all the other garbage in the bill?

What’s Else Is in the Bill?

If you don’t think Biden or Trump would use such powers to do whatever they want by executive order, then you are not thinking.

Good Synopsis

Where’s the Bill Going?

The House passed the bill overwhelmingly, but the path is more than a bit uncertain.

Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer has not said if he will bring this up for a vote. He can kill it easily by referring the bill to a committee to study it to death.

Q: Why would Schumer send the bill to committee?
A: To kill the bill without taking responsibility for killing the bill.

Q: Why would he want to kill the bill?
A: It’s the votes, stupid.

If the bill makes it through Congress, Biden says he would sign it.

There are 170+- million mostly zoomers and millennials who use the app. Some of them make their livelihood on TikTok. All of them would be upset. And tens of thousands of them would take it out on Biden in November.

Schumer, is not interested in doing what’s right, but he is very interested in not doing things that could cost the election. A TiKTok ban could easily cost Biden the election.

Imagine Four More Years

I dislike Trump, but I detest Biden. Elon Musk sums up the situation nicely.

We cannot take four more years of insane energy policy, woke madness, regulatory madness, and massively inflationary Bidenomics.

Biden Wants to Hike Taxes by $7 Trillion Dollars

Please note that Biden Wants to Hike Taxes by $7 Trillion Dollars

If Democrats win the trifecta with a clean sweep of the Senate, House, and White House in November, taxes would rise by $7 trillion over 10 years.

Gen Z, the Most Pessimistic Generation in History

In case use missed it, please see Gen Z, the Most Pessimistic Generation in History, May Decide the Election

Young adults are more skeptical of government and pessimistic about the future than any living generation before them. This is with reason, and it’s likely to decide the election.

Meanwhile, I anxiously await that call from Elon Musk. I am sure he wants to join my consortium to buy TikTok.

Thousands of beautiful but toxic sea creatures washing up on Texas shores

Thousands of beautiful but dangerous sea creatures are washing up on Texas’ coast — bungling plans for many spring breakers.

The blue dragons — which are shell-less mollusks known as “the most beautiful killer in the ocean” — popped up in droves along the shores of North Padre Island Sunday for the first time this year, officials at the Harte Research Institute said.

Experts posted a series of breathtaking photos of the stunning blue dragons, but offered a starch warning not to get too close to the tiny predator.

“When threatened or touched, it can release stinging cells with more powerful stings than the Portuguese man o’ war can alone! That’s why we recommend just taking photos and not touching,” the Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s marine research institute said on Facebook.

The thousands of blue dragons were blown in over the weekend by the strong southeast winds that Texas experiences every spring, according to the institute.

The creatures themselves are partly blown in by the waves, but are also in hot pursuit of the other venomous aquatic critters they feed on that are swept by the gusts, including man-o-wars, by the wind sailors and blue buttons.

Blue dragons — also known by their less-glamorous scientific name, Glaucus atlanticus sea slug — feed on the toxins of the species and process their cells to zap predators with an even stronger sting, which can cause nausea, pain and vomiting.

Although only about an inch long, Blue dragons have enough power to send a human to the hospital with a single sting.

As if spending one’s spring break avoiding the tiny, but poisonous creatures isn’t enough, experts warn that thousands of more blue dragons will visit the coast in the coming weeks.

“This is just the first “blue wave” of these organisms washing in together. You can expect to see this happening more as we get into spring with strong southeast winds blowing them onshore. Happy beachcombing!” the Harte Research Institute said.
