FDNY boss rips firefighters in texts to NY AG Letitia James: ‘I can’t fix them’

FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh wants to “fix” the behavior of her department’s predominately male workforce — but can’t figure out how to extinguish their flames of discontent.

Kavanagh — who’s butted heads with plenty of male underlings since being named the city’s first female fire commissioner in 2022 — made the blunt admission while apologizing to New York Attorney General Letitia James during a March 8 text exchange, a day after pro-Donald Trump firefighters and other attendees mercilessly booed the Democratic pol during a department promotion ceremony.

“I should have called you last night, but I’ve been trying to find a way to say I’m sorry that doesn’t involve me apologizing for men who don’t deserve such grace,” texted Kavanagh, according to records The Post obtained from the AG’s office through a Freedom of Information Law request.

“I haven’t succeeded. I am sorry that we didn’t stop them and that I can’t fix them.”

Kavanagh, who began her career in public service working campaigns for ex-President Barack Obama and other Democrats, told her longtime political ally, “I wouldn’t be here without you.”

Kavanagh told James in a March 8 text that she previously helped teach her how dealing with “bullying, threats and lots of booing with grace” is important in public service if you want to “make big change”Obtained by The New York Post

The fire commissioner also thanked James for teaching her firsthand that handling “bullying, threats and lots of booing with grace would be part of the gig if you ever wanted to make big change.”

“So thank you for that. I care about you and will do anything for you, always,” she added.

James thanked Kavanagh for the kind words but refused to admit ever being booed during her 20 years holding elected offices, which include stints as NYC’s public advocate and a Brooklyn councilwoman.

James insisted in a text to Kavanagh that the promotion ceremony was the first time she ever got booed.Obtained by The New York Post

“The guys who were there are new to the dept and don’t know my history as it relates to fdny,” James texted. “We have work to do and I am willing to put in the time. BTW – this is my first time that I have been booed.”

During a May 10 text exchange with another FDNY staffer whose name was redacted, James expressed regrets about agreeing to speak at the ceremony, held three days earlier at Christian Cultural Center’s Brooklyn Campus in Starrett City.

“I am so sorry [the] episode took away from people being promoted and their families …” James said. “I should have taken temperature, checked with [the] department and stayed away. I have to repair relationships with members.”

James initially planned to hold a Bible while her friend, The Rev. Pamela Holmes, was sworn in as the department’s second female chaplain, and the first Black woman to hold that title.

However, Kavanagh texted the attorney general two days before the ceremony and convinced her to also be a guest speaker.

James was greeted by loud jeers while walking to the podium during the event. As she continued her speech, the booing swiftly turned to chants in support of Trump.

Kavanagh returned to the Christian Cultural Center March 11 to tell church members she’s sorry James was met with boos — but only after sending the attorney general a copy of her prepared remarks and getting a green light to proceed.

“I’ll send them over to make sure there isn’t anything you’re uncomfortable with,” Kavanagh texted March 10.

The heckling came mere weeks after James’ office won a $454 million civil fraud judgment against Trump, which the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is appealing.

FDNY spokesman Jim Long said Kavanagh’s texts to James “reflect her deep disappointment and frustration about the actions of a few bad actors, who may or may have not been active” FDNY employees

'Biden Family Now 'Expected To Discuss Future Of Campaign' After Disaster Dementia Debate'

After Jill Biden spent Saturday in the Hamptons orchestrating Weekend at Bernie's 3, NBC News reports that the Biden family is expected to discuss 'the future of his re-election campaign' at Camp David on Sunday following a horrendous debate on Thursday which laid bare to the world the fact that Joe Biden is not running the country.

According to the report, while top Democrats jumped to publicly reiterate their support for Biden, "senior congressional Democrats, including Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Nancy Pelosi of California, have privately expressed concerns about his viability, said two sources apprised of those discussions."

One Democratic House member who's still in the closet over Biden pulling out told NBC (which spoke with over a dozen Democrats) that three colleagues agreed during votes on the House floor Friday.

And so, while the party is still virtue circling the wagons, they clearly want Biden out - and are 'giving him space' to "determine next steps. They believe only the president, in consultation with his family, can decide whether to move forward or to end his campaign early — and that he won’t respond well to being pushed."

So that's on the table.

"The decision-makers are two people — it’s the president and his wife," said one of the sources familiar with the discussions, adding "Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation."

According to another person 'familiar with his mood,' Biden is "humiliated, devoid of confidence and painfully aware that the physical images of him at the debate — eyes staring into the distance, mouth agape — will live beyond his presidency, along with a performance that at times was meandering, incoherent and difficult to hear."

"It's a mess," the person said.

Yes... And this is what the world just saw from the man with the nuclear codes:

Another source said, Joe will only listen to Jill Biden.

"The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady," they said. "If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course."

After NBC News printed the above story, a 'source familiar' scrambled to let them know that the Camp David gathering was not a formal family meeting.

"Any discussion about the campaign is expected to be informal or an afterthought," said the source. "No one is sitting down for a formal or determinative discussion."

Damage control intensifies...

Earlier Saturdaythe White House told Axios that Biden is basically sundowning all the time, but is 'dependably engaged' between the hours of 10am to 4pm, and that outside of that range, he's 'more likely to have verbal miscues and become fatigued.'

Biden claims at posh NJ fundraiser that his debate debacle impressed undecided

President Biden went to a posh fundraiser at a New Jersey mansion Saturday and reportedly claimed to the crowd that his gaffe-filled, disastrous debate against Donald Trump actually converted undecided voters to his camp.

The 81-year-old Commander-in-Chief made the dubious declaration at a private event at the home of New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, which his wife announced had raised $3.7 million, NJ.com reported.

While Biden admitted to the small crowd that his debate performance was lackluster — prompting several major newspapers to call on him to bow out of his reelection bid — he said voters interpreted the event differently.

“Research during the debate shows us converting more undecided voters than Trump did, in large part because of his conduct on Jan. 6,” Biden told the several dozen people at the party, the news site said.

“People remember the bad things during his presidency.”

Independent voters weren’t the only ones Biden claimed to have won the support of — he also told the New Jersey crowd that his polling numbers among Democrats moved up after the debate.

The notion flies in the face of several surveys released in the last two days, including one commissioned by The Post that saw Biden’s support dwindle after taking on Trump.

“I didn’t have a great night, but I’m going to be fighting harder,” Biden told the crowd, the report said.

First Lady Jill Biden tried to assuage the supporters, saying her presidential husband had admitted his poor performance as soon as he came off the stage.

“You know, Jill, I don’t know what happened. I didn’t feel that great,” she called him telling her.

The private fundraiser was the second of the day that the Bidens attended.

Earlier, the couple rubbed elbows with mega-donors at the Hamptons home of hedge-fund billionaire Barry Rosenstein and his wife Lizanne.

Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, as well as business leaders Loews Hotels CEO Jonathan Tisch and his socialite wife Lizzie, were said to have been in attendance — and to have shelled out as much as $250,000 to attend the party.

During the star-studded event, a plane toting a streamer reading “BI-DONE!” soared across the sky.
