White House put blinders on as China infiltrated our government

For years I have warned that the Chinese Communist Party has been working to infiltrate America’s society and government at every level.

The safety and sovereignty of our nation depends on our ability to counter this threat.

That is the exact message I brought to the National Governors Association as secretary of state in 2020 — an association chaired by then-New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo

It appears that neither Cuomo nor his successor, Gov. Hochul, took my warnings seriously.

This week, Linda Sun, an aide who had served in the offices of both governors, was charged with acting as an agent of the Chinese Communist Party.

In the unsealed indictment, it was revealed that Sun and her husband had received millions in laundered cash from the Chinese Communist Party and, in return, “worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP.”

Among her many treasonous activities, Sun had worked to block Taiwanese officials from being able to contact the governor’s office since 2016, ensured content in speeches and press releases accorded with CCP-approved language, granted CCP officials access to high-level state government discussions such as COVID response efforts and even personally participated — in the capacity of a senior New York state official — in the CCP-organized protest against the democratically-elected president of Taiwan, who was visiting New York City.

While these details may come as a shock to some, this is exactly how the CCP operates. Beijing seeks to influence every level of our society, from the federal government to universities, to state senates and even PTA meetings.

We cannot treat this threat as something that is far away, across a vast ocean. The CCP is inside the gates.

I saw this firsthand during my time as secretary of state in the Trump administration.

Confucius Institutes had proliferated on college campuses across our country, spreading the CCP’s propaganda to our younger generations.

We stopped nearly all of it by designating the Confucius Institute program a foreign mission — although we only scratched the surface in combatting Beijing’s influence operations within our universities.

We placed the same designation on the National Association for China’s Peaceful Unification, a group that answers to the CCP-controlled United Front Work Department and coordinates “Sister City” programs with metropolitan areas all over America and the world.

We also shut down the largest espionage effort in US history when we closed down the CCP’s consulate in Houston, from which CCP agents had been coordinating massive levels of industrial espionage and intellectual property theft.

Asleep on the job

This commitment to keeping America safe from CCP infiltration has been woefully neglected by the Biden-Harris administration.

Early last year, a Chinese spy balloon was allowed to traverse the continental US before finally being shot down off the coast of South Carolina.

The Biden-Harris administration did not hold the CCP accountable.

Inexplicably, the Biden-Harris White House also shut down the China Initiative, an anti-espionage program started in the Trump administration focused solely on the CCP’s malign activities.

And the open southern border has allowed tens of thousands of Chinese nationals — many of them military-aged males — to cross into our country illegally with no real safeguards.

Last year, Biden welcomed CCP Chairman Xi Jinping to San Francisco with open arms, feting him as if he were a conquering king.

We now know that in the days surrounding that conference, Chinese diplomats were also working with pro-CCP diaspora groups here in the US to intimidate, harass, and silence Americans who protested Xi Jinping’s policies — many of whom were first-, second- or third-generation Chinese-American immigrants who know better than anyone just how wicked the CCP truly is.

As for Kamala Harris, you can count on one hand the number of times she has mentioned the Chinese Communist Party on the campaign trail.

She won’t dare say a bad word about China.

The American people should ask why.

The truth is that Biden, Harris, Hochul and other progressive leaders dominating the left live in a fantasy world.

They believe that the US relationship with the CCP should be based on mutual understanding, fair competition and cooperation around issues like climate change.

This is a dangerous delusion that gives the CCP all the room it needs to infiltrate our government and society.

America will only be secure if our relationship with China is centered on the understanding of the CCP’s ideological hostility toward America, on transparency and reciprocity.

If American entities cannot buy land in China next to a Chinese military base, we should not allow it to happen here.

If American firms must consent to technology transfers and CCP overwatch to do business in China, it should not be so easy for Chinese firms to do business here.

If our diplomats cannot freely and privately communicate with Chinese citizens, we should have no tolerance whatsoever for CCP officials doing the same with American citizens.

The list goes on and on.

We are throwing our gates open to our enemies. It has to stop, and it will only stop if we elect leaders at all levels of our government — starting with Donald Trump — who see this threat clearly and will keep America free and safe.

Mike Pompeo was US secretary of state from 2018 to 2021.

Galderma Stock Falls After Report That Backers Plan to Sell Shares

Galderma's shares dropped after a report said that some shareholders would sell shares in the skincare company, months after its debut on the Swiss stock exchange.

The stock traded 3.6% lower at 77.83 Swiss francs ($91.52) in midday European trading, having fallen as much as 5.1% earlier in the session.

"The transaction is expected to increase the free float of Galderma and improve the liquidity of the stock," a spokesperson of the company said. "No changes to Galderma's governance and board will follow as a result of the transaction."

On Tuesday, Bloomberg reported that the private equity backers of Galderma were looking to sell $1.2 billion worth of shares. The report said that EQT, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Auba Investment intended to place some 13 million shares with investors, representing a 5.5% stake.

These shareholders didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.

The news comes just months after Galderma--which houses brands such as Cetaphil and Restylane--went public in Switzerland. At that time, the listing of its shares became the largest initial public offering of the year, according to Dealogic data.

In August, L'Oreal agreed to buy a minority stake in Galderma valued at $1.85 billion. The French beauty giant said it was acquiring a 10% stake in the company from EQT-led Sunshine SwissCo, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority and Auba Investment.

L'Oreal's move was aimed at bolstering its exposure to the fast-growing market for aesthetic injections such as fillers, which Galderma sells.

Faster US Settlement Hit Harder Than Expected: Citi Survey

A shift to shorter settlement for U.S. securities transactions earlier this year had a greater-than-anticipated impact on market participants across the board, with Europe reporting the greatest hit, a Citigroup survey showed.

The United States sped up its settlement cycle in May, requiring that equities, corporate and municipal bonds and other securities transactions settle one business day after the trade, instead of two, or T+1.

The transition "was more impactful than expected" for 44% of buy- and sell-side firms, the Securities Services Evolution survey said.

Europe saw the most impact because of the challenges of managing settlement and funding issues in the middle of the night, it added. Overseas investors use currency trades to fund their U.S. securities transactions.

The poll of nearly 500 institutions, conducted in June, gives an insight into how the industry managed the transition globally, and highlights how T+1 was felt across the trade cycle.

"Every area appears to have been more impacted than originally anticipated, from funding to headcounts, securities lending and fail rates," the survey said.

Securities lending, the loan of stocks or other securities to investors, saw the greatest impact across organizations, rising to 50% from 33%. Funding or margin requirements, headcounts and funding costs were also affected.

"Funding has also been at the center of this impact — albeit with an imbalance across the sell-side and buy-sides," the survey stated.

Some 56% of sell-side firms said their securities lending and recalls activities were "significantly impacted" by the move. That had been one of the major concerns voiced by market participants ahead of T+1 being implemented.

Additionally, 52% of banks and brokers saw their headcounts and staffing levels affected, indicating that a preference for hiring instead of using automation has left the sell-side "exposed to large volumes of manual processing and exception handling triggered by their clients," the survey stated.

Citi said more time is needed before the "true, deeper" impact of the accelerated settlement cycle is understood.

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association and the Investment Company Institute led the move to T+1. DTCC and Sifma did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

An ICI spokesperson said that daily margin requirements decreased by nearly $4 billion in the immediate aftermath of T+1, which over a year "adds up to almost a trillion dollars that managers can put to use elsewhere, which represents a huge win for investors."

Kroger CEO pins price increases on rising costs at trial

Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen attributed rising grocery prices to increasing costs for retailers as he defended the grocery chain's proposed $25 billion merger with rival Albertsons at a trial on Wednesday.

In testimony a trial in Portland, Oregon, McMullen cited rising supplier costs, fuel prices and credit card swipe fees when asked by the company's lawyer why prices have risen.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission and several states sued in federal court to block the merger, and are seeking to show the deal would lead to higher prices and reduce the bargaining leverage of unionized store workers by ending the fierce rivalry between Kroger and Albertsons.

Soaring food prices, which have become a hot button political issue in the U.S. presidential race, have risen 25% between 2019 and 2023, faster than other consumer goods and services, U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics showed.

"Absolutely not," McMullen replied when asked if Kroger would raise its prices after the merger. "We believe over time, value will be increasingly important and you can't price your items above the market."

Kroger has argued it needs the increase in scale from the merger to compete with Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer, while Albertsons has said if the deal falls through, it may have to consider layoffs and store closures.

DOI: 10.3389/fphar.2024.1376474

Abstract

Objectives: To know the frequency and characteristics of neurological manifestations of probable immune origin occurring after exposure to COVID-19 vaccination. In addition, to pre-study the usefulness of the Spanish pharmacovigilance system and lymphocyte transformation test in establishing causality. Methods: Retrospective case study, including patients admitted to the Neurology department from January 2021 to May 2022 with a probable neuroimmune disorder. Demographic, clinical and COVID-19 vaccination antecedent data were collected from medical records. Results: From a total of 108 patients, 30 were excluded due to a different etiological diagnosis after follow-up. Thirty-six patients (46.2%) had received the COVID-19 vaccine in the previous 3 months (21.8% during the previous month). BioNTech-Pfizer vaccine was the most frequent in this group (63.9%). 69/108 were female and mean age 51.2 years (SD 22.59), with no significant difference with not recently-vaccinated (U-Mann Whitney, p = 0.256). The neurological syndromes found were (vaccinated/total): polyradiculoneuropathy (8/16), encephalitis (5/11), multiple sclerosis relapse (5/16), optic neuritis (1/4), myelitis (3/6), cranial neuropathy (6/10), aseptic meningitis (1/3) and others (7/11). Acute immunosuppressive treatment was administered in 61.1% of cases and 47.2% presented complete clinical improvement, without significant differences with non-vaccinated patients (chi-square, p = 0.570). Eleven vaccinated patients were studied in the pharmacovigilance office for possible adverse drug reaction. Causality according to the Spanish pharmacovigilance system (SPVS) algorithm was "Related" to COVID-19 vaccine (score ≥ 4) in 11 cases with positive in vitro study (lymphocyte transformation test) to polyethylene glycol-2000 and polysorbate-80 in 4 cases. Conclusion: Neuroimmune disorders appearing after administration of COVID-19 vaccine do not seem to present important differentiating clinical and/or evolutive features. Delayed hypersensitivity to vaccine excipients could be one of the pathophysiological mechanisms, and lymphocyte transformation test is a useful tool to identify it.

, Stefan Hockertz b, Oliver Hirsch c, Stephan Korupp d, Bernd Klosterhalfen e, Andreas Schnepf f, Gerald Dyker g

Highlights

Face masks filter bacteria, dirt, plastic fibres, but may also cause health harms.

Inhalation of particles and potentially toxic substances from the mask is possible.

We found high micro- and nanoplastics release and content.

we evidenced exceedances for volatile organic compounds, acrolein, phthalates.

also for xylene, per/polyfluoroalkyl substances and for Pb, Cd, Co, Cu, Sb and TiO2.

Abstract

Background

From 2020 to 2023 many people around the world were forced to wear masks for large proportions of the day based on mandates and laws. We aimed to study the potential of face masks for the content and release of inanimate toxins.

Methods

A scoping review of 1003 studies was performed (database search in PubMed/MEDLINE, qualitative and quantitative evaluation).

Results

24 studies were included (experimental time 17 min to 15 days) evaluating content and/or release in 631 masks (273 surgical, 228 textile and 130 N95 masks). Most studies (63%) showed alarming results with high micro- and nanoplastics (MPs and NPs) release and exceedances could also be evidenced for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), xylene, acrolein, per-/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), phthalates (including di(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate, DEHP) and for Pb, Cd, Co, Cu, Sb and TiO2.

Discussion

Of course, masks filter larger dirt and plastic particles and fibers from the air we breathe and have specific indications, but according to our data they also carry risks. Depending on the application, a risk-benefit analysis is necessary.

Conclusion

Undoubtedly, mask mandates during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic have been generating an additional source of potentially harmful exposition to toxins with health threatening and carcinogenic properties at population level with almost zero distance to the airways.
