Laken Riley’s horrifying 911 call played in court

The chilling 911 call that captured Georgia nursing student Laken Riley’s horrifying final moments was played in court Friday — leaving her grieving mother in a flood of tears during the first day of opening statements.

Riley, 22, triggered the emergency function on her cellphone and called 911 while running on the University of Georgia campus around 9:11 a.m. Feb. 22, prosecutor Sheila Ross told the Athens-Clark County courtroom.

Only a male voice was heard on the brief, muffled audio that was played in court.

Those in the courtroom listened to the operator repeating herself, saying, “Clark County 911. Hello, Clark County 911. Can anyone hear me?”

The call was ended at 9:12, and the operator tried to call back but received no answer, Ross explained.

Riley’s mother, Allyson Phillips, was seen sobbing during the 911 call.

The suspect, Jose Ibarra, sat stone-faced as the call was played in court.

Earlier in the opening statements, prosecutors detailed how Riley fought for life for a staggering 18 minutes.

Ibarra, the state claimed, was “hunting for females” on the picturesque Athens campus when he came upon Riley.

“When Laken Riley refused to be his rape victim, he bashed her skull in with a rock repeatedly,” Sheila Ross alleged.

“The evidence will show that Laken fought. She fought for her life, she fought for her dignity, and in that fight, she caused this defendant to leave forensic evidence behind. She also marked her killer for the entire world to see.”

One of Riley’s friends alerted authorities that she failed to return home from her run later that morning.

The nursing student’s body was found in a wooded area off the running trail shortly after noon.

When The Post first contacted the Athens-Clarke County coroner the day after Riley was killed, the office said there was “evidence of foul play” at the scene, and that it was obvious she had been killed violently.

Pakistan Seeks to Sell Loss-Making Flag Carrier PIA to Other Countries

Pakistan has decided to offer its unprofitable flag carrier to other countries in a direct sale deal as one option after a failed attempt.

The government will sell Pakistan International Airlines Corp. through a government-to-government deal or privatization process, the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation said in a statement. The nation failed to sell the airline earlier this month after the sole bid it received in the auction was rejected for being 8.5 times below the minimum price.

US Retail Sales 'Control Group' Unexpectedly Tumbled In October, Headline Beat

If the omniscient chaps at BofA are right, the soft landing narrative is about to crash as they forecast a well below consensus tumble in retail sales this morning...

Source: BofA

...but notably this is mainly due to seasonals, apparently.

Once again, seasonal adjustments are likely to impact the October retail sales report. The Census Bureau's projected seasonal factor (SF) for October 2024 is considerably less favorable than the October 2023 SF. Meanwhile, the October SF in the BAC card data is little changed from last year.

Source: BofA

So, given all that, what happened!?

Well, a lot!

  • The headline retail sales print beat expectations rising 0.4% (+0.3% exp).

  • Core retail sales (ex-autos and gas) disappointed, rising just 0.1% (+0.3% exp).

  • But the Control Group - which is used for GDP calculations - tumbled 0.1% MoM (+0.3% exp).

BUT - the disappointments are likely driven by major upward revisions to the prior month

  • Headline September revised up from +0.4% MoM to +0.8% MoM.

  • Core revised up from +0.7% to +1.2% MoM.

  • Control Group revised up from +0.7% MoM to +1.2% MoM.

Source: Bloomberg

The driver of the headline beat was all cars and food...

Core retail sales growth slowed on a YoY basis...

Source: Bloomberg

On a non-seasonally-adjusted basis, retail sales jumped 6.8% MoM...

Source: Bloomberg

The Control Group data is 'noisy' - September was revised up to its strongest MoM jump since Jan 2023 (but this was the second monthly decline in nominal retail sales in three months)...

Source: Bloomberg

A real Goldilocks of a data set there - hot headline, cool core, ugly control group - take your pick, dove or hawk!

Ukrainian troops train for trench warfare near France's WW1 battlefields

Soldiers scramble through trenches under a haze of yellow smoke, machine gunfire booms across the fields, invisible drones buzz overhead and voices scream in Ukrainian "Watch out!"

The scene could be 3,000 km (1,860 miles) away in Ukraine's Donbas region, but instead some 2,000 Ukrainian conscripts and veterans are training in the muddy fields of France's eastern Marne region, where French and German armies once hammered each other during World War 1.

The initiative is part of a European Union-funded programme that has already prepared 60,000 Ukrainians for the front lines since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

For this training the French military has tried to recreate the conditions faced by the Ukrainian forces back home, while training them on the equipment that France is providing.

This includes 128 armoured vehicles for troop movements and reconnaissance, Caesar howitzers, anti-tank missile units, surface-to-air missiles and battlefield radars.

The Anne of Kyiv brigade - named after a princess who married French King Henri I in 1051 in nearby Reims cathedral - has been training in France since September, and in the next 10 days will head to Poland before being dispatched to the front.

French officials say Ukraine needs as many as 15 new highly trained, battle-ready brigades, especially amid uncertainty over future Western military aid following the victory of Donald Trump - a strong critic of such aid - in the U.S. elections.

'WAR FOR OUR EXISTENCE'

Most of the Ukrainians being trained here only joined the army a month before coming to France, while about 10% are veterans. Their average age is 38 but some are as old as 50.

Those who spoke to Reuters sounded apprehensive but determined to defend their country.

"Fear is part of war. For us it's a war for our existence and survival," said Colonel Dmytro Rymschyn, 38, who heads the Anne of Kyiv brigade.

"We will soon go back to our native land and our brigade will show its competence. I believe in our victory."

Mykhailo, 50, who left a chemical factory to join the army, was trained to lead an AMX light tank squadron.

When asked whether he hoped the war could end by year-end, he smiled awkwardly: "The hope is that it finishes before we have to go back."

French officials said the current trainees, despite many being civilians, were learning quickly and were showing how Ukraine's army can adapt despite shortages on the ground.

After nine weeks of training, the Ukrainians were now able, for example, to repel an attack on their trenches and to mount a counter-attack.

French Defence Minister Sebastien Lecornu told reporters France hoped to prepare more such troops in coming months.

"There is a certain human element to all of this," he added. "There is an exchange with people here who in several weeks will be in a combat situation on the frontline and some of them may well lose their lives."

Regeneron, Sanofi Get New FDA Review of Dupixent for CSU

French drug major Sanofi (SNY) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (REGN) announced Friday that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has accepted for review the resubmission of the supplemental biologics license application or sBLA for Dupixent (dupilumab) to treat chronic spontaneous urticaria or CSU.

The FDA decision is expected by April 18, 2025. If approved, Dupixent would be the first targeted therapy for CSU in a decade.

The sBLA for Dupixent (dupilumab) is to treat adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older with CSU whose disease is not adequately controlled with H1 antihistamine treatment.

CSU is a chronic inflammatory skin disease driven in part by type-2 inflammation, which causes sudden and debilitating hives and recurring itch. The disease is typically treated with H1 antihistamines, medicines that target H1 receptors on cells to control symptoms of urticaria, but it remains uncontrolled in many patients.

More than 300,000 people in the US suffer from CSU that is inadequately controlled by antihistamines.

Dupixent, being jointly developed by Sanofi and Regeneron under a global collaboration deal, is a fully human monoclonal antibody that inhibits the signaling of the IL4 and IL13 pathways and is not an immunosuppressant. The Dupixent development program has shown significant clinical benefit and a decrease in type-2 inflammation in phase 3 studies.

The resubmitted sBLA is supported by data from the multi-study LIBERTY-CUPID phase 3 clinical program (Study A, Study B, and Study C) for Dupixent in CSU, which confirm Dupixent significantly reduced itch and hive activity.

The companies noted that the safety results in all LIBERTY-CUPID phase 3 studies were generally consistent with the known safety profile of Dupixent in its approved indications.

Adverse events more commonly observed with Dupixent were injection site reactions and COVID-19 infection.

Dupixent has been approved for CSU in Japan and the United Arab Emirates and is also under regulatory review in the EU based on earlier study readouts.

Dupixent has received regulatory approvals in more than 60 countries in one or more indications, and more than 1 million patients are currently being treated with Dupixent globally.
