FBI hunts terror cell in New Orleans as 3 men, 1 woman seen planting IEDs around city

New Year’s celebrations in New Orleans turned tragic early Wednesday after a terrorist mowed down revelers on the city’s iconic Bourbon Street, killing at least 10 and injuring dozens of others, officials said.

After ramming into the crowd, driver Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, was shot dead during a gunfight with cops that left two officers injured. Jabbar grew up in Texas and is believed to have served in the military for 10 years, sources told The Post.

He drove an EV pickup truck — which displayed a black ISIS flag on the back — through the barricades on the corner of Bourbon and Canal streets. The FBI has yet to confirm his possible connections or affiliations with ISIS.

At least three improvised pipe bombs were found nearby in the city’s famed French Quarter, including one in Jabbar’s truck. Two were homemade with nails hidden in blue coolers, sources told The Post.
The FBI does not think the terrorist “was solely responsible,” the agency said Wednesday afternoon, and a Louisiana State Police intelligence bulletin obtained by The Associated Press revealed that three men and a woman were seen stashing the devices across the historic district.

“This is not just an act of terrorism – this is evil,” New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said during a news conference Wednesday.

Jabbar “was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did,” Kirkpatrick had said earlier. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.”

FBI investigating additional scene in Houston related to New Orleans attack

The FBI in Houston said agents are investigating a scene related to the terror attack in New Orleans.

The investigation, launched in tandem with the Harris County Sheriff's Office, will look into suspicious activity in north Houston, according to a statement from the FBI Houston.

"We have secured a perimeter in that area and are asking people to avoid the area. FBI Houston personnel and specialized teams will be on-site for several hours," the statement read.

"This activity is related to this morning's New Orleans attack, but due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, no further information can be provided."

Terror suspect Shamsud Din Jabbar is from Texas, and the truck he used in the attack on Bourbon Street also had Texas plates.

Police 'heighten' security in Washington, DC, after New Orleans attack

Police are "heightening" their "security posture" in Washington, DC, in the wake of the New Orleans truck attack.

The DC Metro Police Department in a Wednesday statement announced the shift toward an "increased police presence" citywide "out of an abundance of caution ... in light of recent events," while noting "there is no known threat" to the nation's capital.

The department also extended its "deepest condolences to the families, friends, and community members affected by the tragic events in New Orleans," where an ISIS flag-flying terrorist killed at least 10 people and injured dozens when he ran over New Year's Day revelers on Bourbon Street.

The FBI said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the suspect, Shamsud Din Jabbar, was not “solely responsible” for the attack.

The ISIS flag-flying terrorist who killed at least 10 people and injured dozens of others in on Bourbon Street in New Orleans had help from at least two other people, according to the feds.

Video surveillance from the French Quarter show three men and one woman planting explosives at multiple locations, a federal alert to police departments around the country said.

Law enforcement sources told The Post that authorities are currently investigating whether the attack has connections to any international terror groups.

The FBI, in a briefing Wednesday afternoon, seemed to play down the threat -- saying only that  Shamsud Din Jabbar was not "solely responsible" for the carnage.

At least three IEDs, which were pipe bombs wired with remote detonators, were found, sources said.

Appeals Court Upholds Deal That Removes Death Penalty For Alleged 9/11 Mastermind

by Zachary Stieber via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

The U.S. Department of Defense’s appeals court has turned down the Pentagon’s attempt to rescind the plea deals for the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and several alleged accomplices, paving the way for the men to avoid the death penalty.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin did not have the authority to rescind the deals, a panel of judges on the U.S. Court of Military Commission Review said in the Dec. 30 ruling.

Even if Austin did have the authority, he waited too long to act as lawyers for the alleged attackers had already started meeting requirements in their pretrial plea agreements, the panel said.

The Pentagon had announced on July 31 that Susan Escallier, the official whom Austin appointed to lead the military court that is handling the 9/11 trials, signed off on the agreements with Khalid Shaikh (Sheikh) Mohammad, Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash, and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi. Mohammed is accused of masterminding the 9/11 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 in the United States, with help from the two others.

“In exchange for the removal of the death penalty as a possible punishment, these three accused have agreed to plead guilty to all of the charged offenses, including the murder of the 2,976 people listed in the charge sheet,” a letter from military prosecutors to the families of victims of the attack said.

Austin said on Aug. 2 that given the case’s significance, he would be in charge of it. He withdrew Escallier’s authority and the pretrial agreements.

U.S. Air Force Col. Matthew McCall, a judge, ruled in November that Austin lacked the authority to withdraw the agreements. Even if he had the authority, it was too late to act, according to McCall.

If an accused begins performance of the terms of a PTA [pretrial agreement], the convening authority loses the right to withdraw from the deal,” the military judge wrote at the time.

The Pentagon appealed the ruling, leading to Monday’s decision.

The panel of judges said that Austin could replace Escallier as the convening authority for the case, even without taking all of her responsibilities. However, they said that the intervention in the current case “is without precedent” and that based on a ruling in a different case, Austin cannot order the withdrawal of the deals for Mohammad, Attash, and Hawsawi.

Escallier could withdraw the agreements, but only until the men started to meet the requirements, according to the panel.

Austin can withdraw Escallier’s authority to approve future agreements in the case, the judges said, in a partial victory for the military.

Officials said at least seven bystanders were injured in the explosion and the driver, who pulled the truck into the valet area of the hotel, was killed, ABC News reported.

It is unclear what caused the blast but the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is treating it as a possible act of terror, the outlet said.

Covid shots don't need to be 'pulled' from market, but stop EUA to boosters without data

 by Vinay Prasad

I received 2 doses of the covid vaccine I didn't want because of an unethical mandate (I only wanted 1 dose, total). I think coercive pressure to mandate the covid shot for kids was wrong, and I think the decision to add the vax to childhood immunization was a catastrophic error and will poison trust for years to come. I said all this at the time.

Recently I watched Calley Means on a podcast where he was asked repeatedly if he would call for the immediate removal of covid shots from the market. He declined to say this.

Let me be clear: that is a silly and pointless policy idea. Right now, in 2024, most people getting the covid shots want them and most people who don't want them, don't get them. (note: the vast majority of Americans say no— aka are smart)

There are some residual mandates around immigration that are stupid, and should and will be dropped by Trump. And some school and medical school mandates that need to fall.

Kamala Harris’ campaign had a covid vax mandate and she paid the price. That mandate ensured she got only the dumbest staffers who thought covid boosters are necessary for 20 year olds who already had covid, and going on Joe Rogan would be a bad idea. Ironically her policy self selected for the out of touch.

Moreover, there is a clearer path to solving the covid vaccine debate forever. The FDA should demand a clinical trial powered for hard outcomes of the fall booster. There can be separate trials by age 18-40, 40-59, 60-80, 80+. And the booster should only get BLA where it works. In the meantime, EUA can be considered for 80+ and in nursing homes or people who are *really* immunocompromised (this is not a 25 year old with mild asthma btw), and rescinded if the trial does not complete.

There is no need to be dramatic and make a useless declaration “I, Calley Means, call for all covid shots…”. It is silly to ask him to say that. And what precisely does that mean? Who will act upon it? How? What legal mechanism?

Just make FDA demand randomized data and covid shots will sink like the Titanic. I suspect the trials may only be positive in the above 80 and nursing home group. The rest will be negative. Actually even here, I am 50-50. The companies, I suspect, know this and will not run them in young ages, but rather withdraw from market.

The people who want to make this declaration are doing a disservice to reform. Their position is crazy and makes the movement to get the truth about vaccine benefits and harms look crazy. Make the companies run the right studies and you will get the truth, once and for all.
