Mass. pol allegedly assaulted ICE, local officers during arrest of accused violent illegal migrant

A Massachusetts police union is calling for charges against a City Councilmember who allegedly assaulted local and federal officers — and incited a caught-on-video chaotic protest of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrest of an accused violent criminal.

The aggressive protest saw as many as 25 neighbors wailing and chanting “no warrant!” and “not the mother!” — with the daughter of the apprehended Ferreira de Oliveira jumping in front of the unmarked ICE vehicle while holding her own infant in an attempt to stop the arrest, video showed.

Etel Haxhiaj, who represents Worcester’s District 5, helped incite the mob into assaulting ICE officers and cops during the Department of Homeland Security’s apprehension in a suburban neighborhood that escalated out of control Friday, the Worcester Police Patrolman’s Union said in a statement obtained by The Post.

“Etel Haxhiaj incited aggression towards the police during the incident. This councilor participated in the conduct of the unruly crowd and eventually assaulted both Worcester police and federal law enforcement officers on scene,” the union said in a statement. “Her behavior also emboldened others to act in this manner.

“Councilor Haxhiaj, in our opinion, broke her oath and these ethical laws, and in doing so put the safety of our officers and our citizens at great risk.”

The statement called for the city to conduct an ethics investigation and for federal authorities to take action against Haxhiaj.

Also part of the protest was Ashley Spring, a candidate for School Board in Worcester, who also allegedly assaulted local cops and ICE agents during the testy arrest.

She faces several charges, including assault and battery on a police officer.

De Oliveira’s daughter was busted after she also ran after the car and kicked its passenger side, Mass Live reported.

She is charged with reckless endangerment of a child, disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, CBS reported.

Haxhiaj “pulled a political stunt and incited chaos by trying to obstruct law enforcement,” DHS claimed in a statement obtained by Spectrum Worcester.

Ferreira de Oliveira was recently arrested by local cops for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery on a pregnant victim, DHS claimed.

The agency claimed she entered the country illegally in August of 2022.

“Through the CBP Home App — the Trump Administration is giving parents illegally in the country a chance to take full control of their departure and self-deport, with the potential ability to return the legal, right way and come back to live the American dream,” DHS said in the statement.

The Worcester Police Department said the “chaotic incident is still under investigation” and more charges could be coming, Fox News reported.

Russia launches air attack on Kyiv, city's mayor says

Ukraine's air defense units were trying to repel a Russian air attack on Kyiv, the city's mayor said, after Ukraine's air force warned of a drone attack on the capital.

The attack came hours after Russia's President Vladimir Putin proposed direct talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul that he said should be aimed at bringing a durable peace.

Reuters's witnesses heard blasts in Kyiv from what sounded like air defense units in operation.

Panama's ex-president Martinelli departs for asylum in Colombia

Colombia granted asylum to Panama's former President Ricardo Martinelli, Colombian authorities said on Saturday, and two sources close to the ex-president said that he had departed the Nicaraguan embassy in Panama City for Colombia.

Martinelli, who was sentenced to over a decade in prison in Panama for money laundering, has been living in the Nicaraguan embassy in Panama City since February last year, after Panama's Supreme Court confirmed his sentence.

Panamanian authorities said in a statement that they offered the ex-president safe passage from the embassy to a local airport in "full compliance with the obligations set forth in the 1928 Convention on Asylum and the 1933 Convention on Political Asylum."

Colombia's foreign ministry said the granting of asylum to Martinelli was "part of Colombia's humanist tradition of protecting people who are persecuted for political reasons."

China’s car sales rose 14.8% in April from a year earlier, as government-subsidised auto trade-ins mitigate the impact of U.S. tariffs on consumer sentiment.

Passenger vehicle sales totalled 1.78 million units last month and were up 8.2% at 6.97 million units in the first four months, data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) showed on Sunday.

51st state? Alberta’s break-up talk with Canada gets real

Alberta’s threat to divorce Canada is getting more serious than ever.

Premier Danielle Smith announced this week that the oil-rich province could hold its first-ever referendum on independence in 2026, as the area’s pro-51st state activists ramp up calls to ditch the Great White North in favor of the star-spangled banner.

“Staying with Canada is finished,” Alberta resident Steve Harvey, 52, told The Post. “We’ve been an eagle locked up in a cage for decades because of Canada. It’s time that we’re set free.”

Alberta’s beef with Canada comes from growing anger over what’s viewed as the Liberal government chocking the province’s oil industry.

“They’ve blocked new pipelines, cancelled various oil and gas projects and banned the very tanker ships needed to carry these resources to new markets,” Smith said this week in a livestreamed address to Albertans.

“We just want to be free to develop and export that incredible wealth of resources we have for the benefit of our families and future generations.”

Fed up Albertans, who held a separation rally last week at the Edmonton legislature attended by close to 500, are also urging their countrymen to write to the White House to express support to join the union.

“This thing is real. There is momentum,” said Edmonton resident Jordon Kosik, who runs a Facebook group advocating for Alberta separation.

It’s a standoff that’s been going on for years, but discontent has brewed stronger lately, with many Albertans emboldened by President Trump’s calls to make Canada his “cherished 51st state.”

Last week’s Liberal win was the last straw for many.

“I made it clear that Albertans will no longer tolerate the way we’ve been treated by the federal Liberals over the past 10 years,” a fed-up Smith warned in March after meeting new Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A recent poll has support for Alberta separation at 36%. Smith – who’s not in favor of the move – has tabled legislation that would trigger a referendum if a citizen-led petition can gather signatures from 10% of eligible voters.
