NYC business leaders hope Cuomo drops out of mayoral race completely: sources

by Charles Gasparino

Prominent New York business leaders who supported Andrew Cuomo are hoping he will drop out of the race completely after his humiliating loss in the Democratic mayoral primary, The Post has learned.

As the former governor has emergency meetings about his political future, at least one prominent business executive and Cuomo supporter reached out to the former governor Wednesday morning and gently nudged him to reconsider staying in the race for the good of the city, The Post has learned.

Other supporters from the city’s business community plan to do so imminently, they say.

“He got destroyed — our best shot is Adams,” said one prominent NYC business leader. “He lost Harlem. How did that happen?

“He had his shot,” said another Cuomo business supporter. “It is over.”

After his humiliating loss to the socialist upstart Zohran Mamdani in the Democratic primary, Cuomo will be watching polling data to decide if he should run as an independent in the general election for New York City mayor, according to two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

Cuomo’s last hope to potentially resurrect his political career and remain in the race, these people say, is if polls show current Mayor Eric Adams, also running as an independent, is “unelectable,” and the city’s business leaders demand that Adams withdraw from the race to prevent a Mamdani victory.

Nevertheless, even Cuomo himself told one person who spoke to him after his defeat Tuesday night that his fate depends on “whatever the polls say” and that dropping out is a real possibility.

Democratic consultant Hank Sheinkopf is predicting Cuomo will eventually concede rather than go down in history as the man who helped an antisemitic leftist get elected to run Gotham. If Cuomo remains in the race, he will further split the moderate vote between Adams and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa.

“What choice does he have?” Sheinkopf told The Post.

Cuomo, at least for now, is playing his cards close to the vest. On Wednesday morning, he was texting business community supporters telling them that he believes Adams is “un-electable” to rally support, The Post has learned.

The former governor is telling people that Adams, who had to face criminal bribery charges from the Trump DOJ before embracing the president’s immigration deportation plans, could falter in the face of additional scrutiny over his ethical conduct. It would leave an opening for him to run and possibly defeat the prospect of a Mamdani mayoralty in a three-way race.

Cuomo is said to be banking on business community support to force Adams out; many business leaders say they will leave the Big Apple if Mamdani is elected given his economic proposals and defund-the-police positions. Mamdani is also a fierce critic of Israel and had once vowed to globalize the intifada.

But business community support is unlikely in the face of the complete drubbing he took Tuesday night.

One thing is certain: GOP nominee and Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa isn’t dropping out.

“The Gambinos told me to shut my mouth in 1992 or else,” he said, referring to a failed assassination attempt that year, adding that “five hollow-point bullets later, I took a licking and came back ticking. The only way I drop out is if I’m in a pine casket 6 feet under.”

ICE expected to detain Abrego Garcia after release

A Tennessee federal judge on Wednesday denied the Trump administration’s bid to keep suspected MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego Garcia behind bars as he awaits trial on federal human smuggling charges.

Abrego Garcia, however, was expected to be detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) upon his release from custody.

“I can’t order ICE to take any particular actions with respect to Mr. Abrego in this case,” US Magistrate Judge Barbara Holmes said during a hearing in Nashville setting the conditions for Abrego Garcia’s release.

“The most I can do is request the US Attorney’s Office to encourage cooperation from Homeland Security,” she added.

Department of Homeland Security vehicles were spotted outside the courthouse during the hearing, which coincided with US District Judge  Waverly D. Crenshaw denying the Trump administration’s bid to stay Holmes’ Sunday ruling ordering the release of Abrego Garcia pending his trial.

Trump blasts Mamdani as a ‘100% Communist Lunatic’

President Trump blasted Zohran Mamdani’s politics – and looks – Wednesday after the socialist’s stunning upset in New York’s Democratic mayoral primary.

“Democrats have crossed the line by elevating a 100% Communist Lunatic,” Trump railed in a Truth Social post.

“We’ve had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous,” he added.

The president then attacked Mamdani’s appearance and speaking voice.

“He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him,” Trump wrote.

“Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!”

The AOC+3 label is likely in reference to the so-called squad in Congress, a progressive group including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar.

Trump also mentioned Mamdani in a sarcastic follow-up post about how Democrats can get back to winning on a national stage.

“The Democrats should nominate Low IQ Candidate, [Congresswoman] Jasmine Crockett, for President, and AOC+3 should be, respectively, Vice President, and three High Level Members of the Cabinet – Added together with our future Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and our Country is really SCREWED!” Trump stated.

The president’s salvo of insults comes as the political world in New York and beyond react to the Democratic socialist’s stunning primary performance Tuesday night that all but locks up the Democratic nomination for mayoral election in November.

The Queens state assemblyman upset former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ultimately conceded the primary race after trailing by about 70,000 votes.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who Trump referenced in his Truth Social post, tweeted that he called Mamdani and looks forward to meeting with him soon.

“He ran an impressive campaign that connected with New Yorkers about affordability, fairness, & opportunity,” Schumer wrote.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who could either help or hurt Mamdani’s agenda if he’s elected mayor, also commended the race the lefty ran.

But other pols were less congratulatory, including moderates in his own party.

“I had serious concerns about Assemblyman Mamdani before yesterday, and that is one of the reasons I endorsed his opponent,” Long Island Rep. Tom Suozzi said on X. “Those concerns remain.”

Meanwhile, fellow Long Island Rep. Laura Gillen lamented that Mamdani is “too extreme” for New York City.

“His entire campaign has been built on unachievable promises and higher taxes, which is the last thing New York needs,” she said in a statement.

“Beyond that, Mr. Mamdani has called to defund the police and has demonstrated a deeply disturbing pattern of unacceptable antisemitic comments which stoke hate at a time when antisemitism is skyrocketing.”

GOP Councilwoman Vickie Paladino, who represents part of Queens, also slammed Mamdani’s election win.

Real New Yorkers know how to spot a cheap three-card-monte dealer who’ll take your money then try to sell you a fake Rolex before you walk away,” Paladino tweeted. “It’s the tourists and transplants who fall for the con.”

It’s unclear if Cuomo will continue his election fight into November on an independent line. Mayor Eric Adams, who is all-steam ahead on an independent line and Republican Curtis Sliwa will be going up against Mamdani in the general.

US allows ethane to be loaded and shipped to China, but not unloaded, letter says

The U.S. sent letters to Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer on Wednesday informing the companies they could load ethane on vessels destined for China but could not unload the ethane in China without authorization, according to a person familiar with the matter and copy of one letter.

The letters from the U.S. Department of Commerce follow a licensing requirement imposed several weeks ago on the companies' exports of ethane to China, which halted shipments and led to vessels anchoring in or hovering around the U.S. Gulf Coast.

The letters may signal the U.S. preparing to lift restrictions imposed on exports to China in late May and early June, as the U.S.-China trade war shifted from retaliatory tariffs, to curbs on each others supply chains. With China granting rare earth export licenses to some firms and saying it would speed up the approval process, the U.S. now appears close to permitting ethane exports to China.

Still, the companies are highly unlikely to risk loading the ethane on vessels and sending them on their way, the person familiar with the matter said. If the vessel makes its way to China, it may be difficult to stop its offloading the ethane and the companies could face penalties of up to twice the value of the shipment if they do.

"This letter authorizes Enterprise Products to load vessels with ethane, transport and anchor in foreign ports, even if... to a party located in China," the letter said. "However, Enterprise Products may not complete such export... to a party that is located in China," without further authorization.

Enterprise Products and Energy Transfer, two of the top U.S. ethane producers and exporters, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. About half of all U.S. ethane exports go to China, where it is used by the petrochemical industry.

The U.S. Department of Commerce also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The ability to load and begin transporting ethane could relieve congestion at ports along the U.S. Gulf coast, where vessels have been stalled.

Since May 23, the U.S. imposed new restrictions on exports to China of everything from ethane and chip design software to jet engines and nuclear plant parts.
