Euro bigs: 'Trump special envoy Steve Witkoff misunderstood Putin’s offer on Ukraine'

Some European leaders are claiming President Trump’s special Envoy Steve Witkoff may have misinterpreted Russian strongman Vladimir Putin’s exact conditions for bringing about an end to his country’s bloody war on Ukraine, a new report said.

Witkoff met with Putin for about three hours in the Kremlin last Wednesday, and their discussion set off a chain of events that ultimately led to President Trump announcing a one-on-one with the Russian leader in Alaska this coming Friday.

But privately, some European allies are complaining that they received varying accounts of what led to the supposed breakthrough with Putin that caused Trump to tout “progress” had been made.

After Witkoff’s lengthy meeting with Putin, Trump held a call with his European counterparts to brief them on what the Russian leader told his envoy.

Trump initially implied that Russia was willing to potentially pull its forces out of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in exchange for complete control of Donetsk, according the Wall Street Journal.

Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Donetsk are territories in the southeast of Ukraine.

Since the war broke out, Russia has been keen on taking control over four territories it has deemed oblasts: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. That’s in addition to its annexation of Crimea in 2014.

But Witkoff later made a different claim to Europeans last Thursday that Putin offered to freeze and withdraw from the front line, according to the report.

By last Friday, Witkoff clarified to his counterparts that what Putin actually offered was for Ukraine to pull out of Donetsk in exchange for a cease-fire.

Several European officials are speculating that Witkoff also may have misunderstood or even talked past Putin on other key details of what was actually proposed.

Some believe that Putin called for a “peaceful withdrawal” from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia in eastern Ukraine and that Witkoff misunderstood that to mean pulling Russian troops out of there, German outlet BILD reported.

However, they believe that Putin actually meant for Ukrainian forces to be withdrawn from those two territories that Russia has attempted to annex during the war.

“Witkoff doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” a Ukrainian government official vented to the outlet.

The Post reached out to a Witkoff spokesperson and the White House for comment.

Witkoff is a real estate buddy of Trump’s and has no foreign policy experience prior to becoming special envoy, where he juggles the responsibilities of trying to broker peace in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.

Ukraine still controls the capitals of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, though Russia has a vast swath of those territories in its possession. Russia also has full control over Luhansk and most of Donetsk.

“Any decisions made against us, any decisions made without Ukraine, are at the same time decisions against peace,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on social media last week amid the confusion.

Zelensky has also poured cold water on the idea of Ukraine ceding territory to Russia.

Still, Putin’s overtures to Witkoff appear to have bought some time.

Trump had given Putin a deadline of last Friday to take steps towards peace with Ukraine or else face secondary sanctions or tariffs — penalties on countries that import oil from Moscow.

Some analysts believe that the penalties Trump dangled in his ultimatum could be catastrophic for Russia’s economy.

Throughout the two-and-a-half-year-long war, Russia has withstood a spate of crippling Western sanctions, in part by continuing exports to China, India, Turkey and other countries.

In June, Russia’s economy minister warned that the country is on the brink of a recession, and Putin announced plans to trim the military budget despite the ongoing war.

Now Trump is set to meet with Putin in Alaska on Friday, marking the first time the Russian leader has set foot on US soil in a decade. The White House is also pushing for Putin and Zelensky to meet, according to Vice President JD Vance.

Witkoff has traveled to Moscow at least five times this year. During his meetings with Putin, the Russian leader took steps to charm him, including by offering him a painting of Trump and recounting how he supposedly went to a church to pray after the July 13, Butler, Pa., assassination attempt.

During this last trip, Putin gifted Witkoff with an Order of Lenin award for Juliane Gallina, a CIA official, whose son was killed fighting for Russia in its war against Ukraine, CBS News first reported.

RFK Jr. claims food stamps fuel diabetes epidemic, wants to block use for soda, candy

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed food stamps are fueling diabetes – as he called Sunday to block the taxpayer-funded welfare program for being used to buy soda and candies.

“Taxpayers should not be financing that,” Kennedy said on the “Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM radio.

He said 18% of federal food stamps to poor families is spent “on candy and sugared drinks” even as nearly 40% of children now have juvenile diabetes.

US Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speaks about the sending of warning letters to companies for illegally marketing products containing 7-hydroxymitragynine, also known as 7-OH, as part of their actions combatting opioids, during a press conference at HHS headquarters in Washington, DC, onJuly 29, 2025.

”We are actually paying for people to get diabetes,” RFK told host John Catsimatidis.

Sugary and fatty foods also contribute to obesity.

American taxpayers are paying twice, RFK said — beginning with funding the purchase of food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The program issues electronic benefits that can be used like cash to purchase food.

“We’re paying again when they get [treated] through Medicaid and, ultimately, Medicare. We are poisoning them with sugars and ultra-processed food,” RFK said.

SNAP helps low-income working people, senior citizens, the disabled and others feed their families. Eligibility and benefit levels are based on household size, income and other factors.

Kennedy said the Trump administration is making headway, noting that 14 states have signed waivers that restrict the purchase of non-nutritious items like soda and candy.

“These waivers are a key step in ensuring that taxpayer dollars provide nutritious options that improve health outcomes within SNAP,” the US Dept. of Agriculture said.

Pritzker hits back at Mamdani for declaring billionaires shouldn’t exist

Billionaire Illinois Dem Gov. JB Pritzker on Sunday ripped socialist New York City mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani’s contention that people of his net worth shouldn’t exist.

“Look, how much money you have doesn’t determine what your values are,” Pritzker fired back on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Mamdani had declared shortly after his shock Democratic primary win in June that he that he doesn’t want Americans to be allowed to amass billion-dollar fortunes.

“I don’t think that we should have billionaires because, frankly, it is so much money in a moment of such inequality, and ultimately, what we need more of is equality across our city and across our state and across our country,” he told “Meet the Press” at the time.

But Pritzker, an heir to the Hyatt hotel fortune, Sunday rattled off his beliefs in universal healthcare, free public education, democracy and opposition to “MAGA Republicans” as evidence that he is a legit Democrat.

“It does not matter what your income level is. What matters is what your values are. And that’s what makes me a Democrat,” the ultra-wealthy pol contended.

Pritzker, who has led Illinois since 2019 and is one of the richest politicians in the country, has an estimated net worth of about $3.6 billion, according to Forbes.

His fortune stems almost entirely from his family’s wealth from its ownership of the Hyatt hotel chain, which was founded by his late uncle, Jay. Some of the gov’s wealth comes from other investments, such as the Pritzker Group.

The Pritzkers have been a fixture on Forbes’ “America’s Richest Families” for decades.

The Illinois Democrat has donated heavily to the party throughout the years and tapped into his deep pockets for his own runs, having spent an estimated $323 million on his two campaigns for governor.

Now he’s gearing up to seek a third term — although he hasn’t ruled out a 2028 presidential run.

Mamdani’s campaign did not respond to a Post request for comment.

As with many top Democrats, Pritzker has refrained from backing Mamdani outright.

The governor has meanwhile made headlines for welcoming Texas Democrats to Illinois in a bid to disrupt GOP redistricting efforts in the Lone Star State. Pritzker shrugged off Republican attacks on him for being hypocritical, given that his state has one of the most heavily gerrymandered maps in the country.

“What Texas is trying to do is, again, violate the Voting Rights Act. We didn’t,” Pritzker claimed. “We held public hearings, legislative hearings. People attended them. They spoke out. There was a map that was put out. There were actually changes made to the map.”

Democrats control 14 of Illinois’ 17 congressional seats — or 82%. Former Vice President Kamala Harris won the state in November with 54% of the vote.

By comparison, Republicans have 26 of the 38 congressional seats in Texas — or 68%. President Trump won Texas in November with 56% of the vote. Trump is hoping to squeeze another five seats out of Texas through the proposed mid-decade redistricting.

Texas Democrats have held up the redistricting effort so far by fleeing the state to stop the state legislature from passing it.
