- New York state officials have reported 22,000 new cases of COVID-19 in the last day.
- The number marks the third straight day the state has reported a record-breaking number of new cases.
- The average daily number of new cases has doubled over the last week in New York City alone.
New York state health officials reported a record-breaking number of new cases of COVID-19 on Monday for the third day in a row as a new surge of the virus overtakes the state.
Out of the 258,612 COVID tests conducted on Sunday, 23,391 came back positive for the virus – pushing the state’s overall positivity rate to 9.04 percent, according to officials. In addition, over 4,000 hospitalizations and 60 new COVID-related deaths were reported.
In New York City, COVID-19 cases more than doubled since last week, which reported a seven-day average of 7,235 cases, a major jump from the 3,834 average daily cases reported for the week before.
“It's going to be a very challenging few weeks, but the good news is based on what our health care leadership understands at this moment, we are talking about a matter of weeks. We're going to see a really fast upsurge in cases. We're going to see a lot of New Yorkers affected by Omicron,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during a press conference Monday.
“So far, thank God, based on everything we've seen so far, the cases are more mild than what we've experienced previously. But again, a lot of research we're still waiting for, a lot of evidence we're still waiting for.”
