Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in the U.S., meeting with Joe Biden and others, and touring munitions plants in Pennsylvania. Biden’s support for Ukraine in its war against Russia has been cautious, but Zelensky thinks Trump’s support might be more tepid still, so he is campaigning for Kamala Harris:
Donald Trump doesn’t know how to stop the war in Ukraine, despite claiming he could end it on his first day as US president, Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
In his harshest criticism yet of the Republican presidential nominee, the Ukrainian president also described Trump’s running mate JD Vance as “dangerous” and “too radical”.
More at the link. Zelensky is supposedly here on a diplomatic mission, courtesy of American taxpayers:
Zelensky is campaigning for Kamala Harris in the critical swing state of Pennsylvania. Is there any precedent for a foreign leader coming to America and campaigning on behalf of a presidential contender? Not that I know of.
The closest analogy I can recall is when Ted Kennedy tried to enlist the Soviet Union’s help in the 1984 election. That proposal included getting Yuri Andropov on American television networks, which Kennedy surely could have arranged. But Kennedy’s overture didn’t involve Andropov coming to America, and in any event the Russians didn’t act on it.
So, as far as I know, Harris’s bringing in a foreign leader to attack her opponent is unprecedented. But that is true of so many things the Democrats are doing these days.
