The AI use case all health systems are adopting: Survey

Ambient Notes, a generative AI tool for clinical documentation, is the only AI application adopted by all surveyed health systems, according to research from Durham, N.C.-based Duke Health.

Eric Poon, MD, a researcher at Duke Health, and industry colleagues surveyed 43 health systems about their AI adoption strategies. The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Here are seven key findings from the survey:

  1. All respondents reported adoption activities related to Ambient Notes, making it the only AI tool with universal uptake.

  2. Fifty-three percent of health systems reported a high level of success using AI for clinical documentation.

  3. Ninety percent of organizations reported at least partial deployment of AI for imaging and radiology, making it the most widely deployed clinical AI use case. However, reported success with diagnostic applications remains limited.

  4. Many health systems have adopted AI for clinical risk stratification, such as early sepsis detection, but only 38% reported high success in this area.

  5. Seventy-seven percent of respondents cited immature AI tools as a significant barrier to adoption.

  6. Forty-seven percent of respondents cited financial concerns as a barrier to implementing AI.

  7. Forty percent of respondents identified regulatory uncertainty as a challenge to adoption.
