Anthropic says it disrupted AI espionage campaign

 Anthropic PBC announced on Thursday that it had detected and disrupted what it described as a highly sophisticated espionage campaign backed by artificial intelligence (AI) in mid-September, likely led by a group sponsored by the Chinese state.

In a statement, Anthropic said the group used AI to consult on the campaign and also to execute cyberattacks against major technology companies, financial and governmental institutions, and the chemical industry. It added that the "threat actor ... manipulated our Claude Code tool into attempting infiltration into roughly thirty global targets and succeeded in a small number of cases."

Anthropic expressed belief that "this is the first documented case of a large-scale cyberattack executed without substantial human intervention." "These attacks are likely to only grow in their effectiveness. To keep pace with this rapidly-advancing threat, we've expanded our detection capabilities and developed better classifiers to flag malicious activity," the company concluded.
