'DC MPD working in ‘close coordination’ with National Guard to ensure safety'

Washington, D.C., police said they are working in “close coordination” with the National Guard to ensure safety after two National Guard members from West Virginia were shot on Wednesday close to the White House.

“Law enforcement agencies across Washington, DC, including the Metropolitan Police Department, are working in close coordination with the National Guard to ensure the safety of our community,” a Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) spokesperson said Friday in an emailed statement to The Hill.

“As we enter the holiday season, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant. If you See Something, Say Something. For emergencies, call 911. To report suspicious activity, contact MPD’s Real Time Crime Center at 202-727-9099, text 50411, or use the iWatch reporting tool,” the spokesperson added.

The National Guard members were hit close to the White House, with officials saying it was a “targeted” attack Wednesday. The suspect drove cross-country from Washington state while planning to go through with the attack.

One of the two soldiers, U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, died, with President Trump announcing her death Thursday night.

“She’s just passed away. She’s no longer with us. She’s looking down at us right now. Her parents are with her. It’s just happened,” Trump said.

The Washington Post reported that local law enforcement are set to be alongside National Guard members on patrol in the nation’s capital, per an email and D.C. police officials.

“Officers will conduct high-visibility patrols with the National Guard and provide assistance as needed,” the Wednesday email for D.C. police leadership read, according to the Post.
