Russia adds Human Rights Watch to ban list

 The Russian Justice Ministry placed Human Rights Watch on its roster of "undesirable" groups on Friday, a designation that blocks the organization from carrying out activities inside the country. Officials offered no explanation for the step, according to local media, taken years after the group closed its Russian offices in 2022.

The organization, based in New York, is known for documenting rights violations by governments and armed forces and it has frequently criticized Russia's actions in Ukraine, accusing its troops of widespread abuses, claims the Kremlin have dismissed.

This addition expands a growing list of foreign organizations targeted by similar measures. In recent years, authorities have applied the same label to groups such as the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, Transparency International, Helsinki Foundation for Human Right and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
