The European Union threatened to veto the draft deal on environmental issues presented by the Brazilian government at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Politico reported on Friday, citing four European diplomats.
According to the report, the delegations were united in their disappointment with the draft, with the EU Commission climate chief Wopke Hoekstra slamming the deal as weak and non-scientific. "This is a BRICS COP ... They’re circling around now a text which is designed for them and they’re all now saying it’s a take-it-or-leave-it text," a European diplomat allegedly said.
Amid the divisive discussions, news broke yesterday that the COP30 conference was temporarily halted and evacuated after a fire broke out at the Belem site.
