Israel said to seek new 20-year security deal with US

The Israeli government is seeking to negotiate a new 20-year military security agreement with the United States, which would incorporate "America First" provisions to garner support from the American government, Axios reported on Thursday, citing Israeli and US officials.

According to the report, although the current 10-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) won't expire until 2028, Israel is looking to conclude the new agreement over the next year and to double its usual length. The report also stated that Israeli officials are hoping the annual assistance will be higher than the $4 billion per year provided by the current deal. Israel's proposal also suggested that some of the money could be used for joint US-Israeli research and development, rather than only direct military aid.

"This is out-of-the-box thinking. We want to change the way we handled past agreements and put more emphasis on US-Israel cooperation. The Americans like this idea," an Israeli official reportedly said.
