The United States Coast Guard (USCG) said it "detected and monitored" a Russian Vishnya-class intelligence ship as it was operating near US territorial waters late last month.
The vessel, identified as the Russian Federation Navy Auxiliary General Intelligence ship Kareliya, was spotted some 15 nautical miles south of Oahu on October 29. A USCG HC-130 Hercules aircraft and the USCG Cutter William Hart responded by conducting what the press release described as a "safe and professional overflight and transiting near the vessel."
Customary international law allows foreign military vessels to transit and operate outside other nations' territorial seas, which extend up to 12 nautical miles from shore, the USCG noted.
