The United States House of Representatives passed a bill on Thursday that would make obtaining federal permits to create infrastructure for artificial intelligence (AI) easier.
The bipartisan bill was greenlighted in a 221-196 vote. The legislation, which is known as the Standardizing Permitting and Expediting Economic Development (SPEED) Act, is supported by tech firms such as Micron Technology Inc., Microsoft Corp., as well as OpenAI Inc. It now has to pass through the Senate.
If okayed, the bill would bring changes to the 1969 National Environmental Policy Act.
