Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto shared a statement on Monday rejecting the European Union's decision to extend sanctions against the country, calling the measures "illegitimate, illegal, and contrary to International Law."
According to the statement published on Telegram, authorities said the sanctions violate the principles of the United Nations Charter and accused EU leaders of pursuing a "hostile" and ineffective policy toward Venezuela. Caracas argued the measures reflect an "erratic foreign policy, lacking autonomy and subordinated to interests alien to the peoples they claim to represent."
The statement followed the EU Council's decision to prolong sanctions against Venezuela for another year, until January 10, 2027, citing concerns over "democracy," "rule of law," and "human rights."
