The United States advised all its citizens to leave Venezuela "immediately," citing security risks linked to the presence of "armed militias" potentially searching vehicles for evidence of "support for the United States."
According to the US embassy in Bogota, Colombia, reports exist of armed militias "known as colectivos setting up roadblocks" to locate Americans still inside the country. "Citizens in Venezuela should remain vigilant and exercise caution when traveling by road," the embassy warned.
Tensions between Washington and Caracas escalated after the capture of the South American country's President Nicolas Maduro. At the same time, Venezuelan authorities seemed to indicate they were ready for dialogue with the US, with Washington halting plans for a second strike against that country.
