Microsoft seen backing US bill on data center energy costs

Microsoft Corp. backed bipartisan legislation in the United States House of Representatives that would require large electricity users to cover upfront costs for power infrastructure tied to new data centers, Politico reported, citing Fred Humphries, corporate vice president for US government affairs.

The bill, titled the Ratepayer Protection Act, was introduced on Thursday by House Energy and Commerce Committee leaders. Humphries said the measure is "an important step to help ensure American families are protected from rising electricity costs as demand for energy continues to grow."

US President Donald Trump had previously promised that the tech giant would shield ratepayers from higher costs.
