Dr Reddy’s launches OTC Prilosec equivalent in U.S.


Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd. (BSE: 500124, NSE: DRREDDY, NYSE: RDY, along with its subsidiaries together referred to as “Dr. Reddy’s”) announced today the launch of Omeprazole Delayed-Release Tablets, 20 mg, an over-the-counter (OTC) store-brand equivalent of Prilosec® OTC (omeprazole delayed-release) Tablets, 20 mg, in the United States market as approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (USFDA).
OTC Omeprazole Delayed-Release Tablets, 20 mg, is a proton pump inhibitor used to treat frequent heartburn occurring two or more days per week in adults*.
“This launch illustrates our continued commitment to the OTC business as well as the depth and breadth of our OTC portfolio,” says Milan Kalawadia, Vice President and Head, US OTC and Speciality Rx businesses, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories. “We look forward to collaborating with our customers to provide high-quality, affordable alternatives to consumers.”
The combined market of Prilosec OTC® and private label omeprazole OTC products had U.S. retail sales of approximately $492 million for the most recent twelve months ending in October 2018 according to IRI.
Dr. Reddy’s Omeprazole Delayed-Release Tablets, 20 mg, is available in 14 count bottles sold in cartons of 1, 2, or 3 bottles each. Each bottle contains one complete 14-day course of treatment.

Constellation Pharmaceuticals initiates Phase 2 portion of ProSTAR trial


Constellation Pharmaceuticals announced an update of the ProSTAR study, its ongoing Phase 1b/2 clinical trial of CPI-1205 in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. The ProSTAR study is evaluating CPI-1205, Constellation’s potent and highly selective small-molecule EZH2 inhibitor, in combination with either enzalutamide or abiraterone / prednisone, in mCRPC patients who experienced disease progression while receiving the other ARS inhibitor. Based on encouraging results from the Phase 1b portion of ProSTAR, the Company has initiated dosing in the randomized Phase 2 portion studying CPI-1205 in combination with enzalutamide versus enzalutamide alone. Constellation has also decided to expand the Phase 2 portion of the study by adding an arm evaluating CPI-1205 in combination with abiraterone in the second-line setting. “We are pleased that CPI-1205 achieved its Phase 1b endpoints in ProSTAR, demonstrating an encouraging safety profile and evidence of clinical activity in both arms,” said Adrian Senderowicz, Chief Medical Officer of Constellation Pharmaceuticals. “As we advance into the Phase 2 portion of the study, we believe combination therapy with CPI-1205 may provide a meaningful second-line treatment option to patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, an area of significant unmet medical need. Novavax initiated at Oppenheimer


Novavax initiated with an Outperform at Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer analyst Kevin DeGeeter started Novavax with an Outperform rating and $4 price target. The analyst believes the company’s respiratory syncytial virus program will generate $250M-plus in peak sales due to its first-to-market position and potential for upside from off-label use in elderly. He also views the NanoFlu vaccine program as underappreciated, with upside based on potential for better potency than market share leader FluZone.

Y-mAbs humanized bispecific GD2 antibody IND receives FDA clearance


Y-mAbs Therapeutics announced that the FDA has cleared the investigational new drug, or IND, application for a humanized bispecific GD2 antibody. It is anticipated that a Phase 1/2 clinical trial will soon be initiated to begin screening patients with relapsed/refractory neuroblastoma, high grade osteosarcoma and other GD2 solid tumors, where patients have relapsed or refractory disease that is resistant to standard therapy. This bispecific product candidate is a fully humanized IgG-scFv format antibody, licensed by Memorial Sloan Kettering to Y-mAbs, in which the anti-CD3 scFv is linked to naxitamab IgG1 and the Fc region is mutated to help prevent cytokine release as well as complement-mediated pain side effects. Y-mAbs expects that this bispecific GD2 antibody may have potential advantages over other bispecific antibodies, such as improved potency due to bivalency, binding to neonatal Fc receptor and longer serum half-life, which obviates continuous infusion and enables more convenient administration to the patient.

Enzo Biochem Reports Fiscal 2019 First Quarter Results


Recent Reimbursement Cuts Emphasize Value of Enzo’s Strategy
Enzo Biochem, Inc. (NYSE:ENZ), an integrated diagnostics and therapeutics company, today reported operating results for the first fiscal quarter ended October 31, 2018, in addition to providing an update on the company’s development of lower cost products, platforms and services for the diagnostics and therapeutics markets.
Recent Developments
  • Optimizing diagnostic processes towards FDA clinical trials on Enzo’s proprietary and affordable open system platform capable of high throughput to meet the needs of clinical laboratories of all sizes. Enzo’s platform includes automation-compatible reagent systems and associated products for sample collection and processing to further drive costs down for diagnostic testing. Enzo’s programs also include manufacturing and assembly of all components required for each step in the diagnostic process for integration into an open platform. Focusing on molecular diagnostics, immunohistochemistry and ELISA platforms which consist of a significant percentage of the cost of goods for clinical laboratories. The Company’s programs encompass all steps from research and development to manufacturing, translation, clinical trials, to FDA approval.
  • To address the tightening reimbursement paradigm, Enzo is expanding its approach to centralize lab to lab reference services providing margin improvement, expanding its specialized testing menu to the Company’s clientele, developing opportunities with institutional clients, and expanding its geographical reach. To support Enzo’s strategic approach, it recently obtained a license from the State of Connecticut allowing Enzo to open a new free standing clinical laboratory in the state. The new facility expands Enzo’s geographical reach, allowing it to expand its Lab-to-Lab reference services in the Northeast. It will also enable Enzo to open additional patient service centers in collaboration with commercial insurance providers to address this large patient population need. Enzo is already designated an in-network provider for three health insurance providers in New England.
  • Impact of diagnostic reimbursements pressures on clinical laboratories is now more widely evident throughout the industry, irrespective of laboratory testing volume. Enzo’s early recognition of the industry challenges has driven the development of the Company’s innovative, expanding line of cost effective, highly efficient platforms and reagents, as well as establishment of a nationally available reference laboratory incorporating these advances.
  • Reported on publication in recent Journal of Lipid Research of a preclinical study by scientific collaborators involving a company-developed proprietary Sphingosine Kinase 1 inhibitor drug candidate effective in reversing resistance to the breast cancer drug tamoxifen, potentially a first line treatment for estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer patients. With more than 50% of patients who initially respond to tamoxifen ultimately failing therapy due to development of resistance, these results suggest that SK1-I may have potential in the treatment of tamoxifen-resistant breast cancers. Enzo research results, as well as those of its collaborators, show that SK1-1 may address significantly unmet medical needs in the treatment of multiple oncology indications and immune-related disorders, warranting further development anticipated in the coming year.
  • Continuing to build one of the most comprehensive intellectual property estates in the industry with recently awarded patent for optimizing real time nucleic acid detection processes.
  • Completed purchase of previously announced additional 36,000-square foot commercial facility in Farmingdale, NY, adjacent to the Company’s current Long Island campus. A renovation underway will add needed infrastructure to produce and distribute Enzo’s expanding low cost, open architecture diagnostic platform products and broaden related services, including automation-compatible reagent systems and associated products for sample collection and processing through to analysis. This new facility will also include GMP manufacturing capabilities.

First Quarter Operating Results
  • Total revenues were $21.3 million, compared to $26.9 million in the prior year, a decrease of $5.6 million. Clinical services revenues were $14.3 million, compared to $19.5 million in the prior year, a decrease of $5.2 million, largely due to reduced insurance reimbursement payments and mix of testing, which were reimbursed at higher than average rates, in the prior year. Total diagnostic testing volume, measured by the number of accessions, decreased 5% year over year, again due to lower high-value testing, partially offset by an increase in esoteric testing, including Enzo’s AmpiProbe woman’s health panel which has increased in volume each quarter since its launch last fiscal year. Product and royalty revenue was $7.0 million compared to $7.3 million in the prior year. The decline year over year was the result of elimination of product royalties due to expiration of the agreement in April 2018.
  • Clinical services revenues for the three months ended October 31, 2017 have been restated to reflect adoption of new revenue recognition rules on a full retrospective basis. Under the new rules, Enzo reports uncollectible balances associated with patient responsibility as a reduction in net revenues; historically these amounts were separately classified in operating expenses as a provision for uncollectable accounts receivable, and amount to $0.6 million and $0.8 million in the three months ended October 31, 2018 and 2017, respectively.
  • Consolidated gross margins were 33% compared with 42.6% in the prior year. Clinical services gross margins were 23.3% compared to 38.4% a year ago. Gross margins in the current year were negatively impacted by lower reimbursement revenue from Clinical Services, as noted above. Clinical products gross margin was 53% compared to 52% in the prior year period.
  • Operating expenses totaled $13.0 million, up 8% compared to $12.0 million a year ago. The increase reflected legal fee expenses in anticipation of a patent infringement and contract related trial, where Enzo is plaintiff, slated to occur next calendar year. Total legal expenses were $1.3 million compared to $0.4 million in the prior year. Selling and general administrative expenses (SG&A) as well as research and development (R&D) expenses were slightly higher year over year in support of the Company’s growth strategies.
  • The GAAP and Non-GAAP net loss was $6.0 million compared to $0.6 million a year ago. The GAAP and non-GAAP net loss per share was $0.13, compared to $0.01 a year ago. EBITDA was a loss of $5.5 million compared to $0.1 million a year ago.
Total cash and cash equivalents at October 31, 2018 were $52.8 million compared to $60.0 million at July 31, 2018. Cash used in operations was $6.2 million during the first quarter of fiscal 2019 and cash used for investing activities, principally capital expenditures, was $1.0 million. Working capital at October 31, 2018 was over $57.3 million.

Olympus in Plea Agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice


1. Outline
Subpoenas were issued to OMSC by DOJ in March and August 2015, seeking information relating to duodenoscopes that were sold in the United States, and the DOJ has since continued an investigation relating to the FDCA. A plea agreement covering the terms of the settlement was announced by the DOJ at a public sentencing hearing on December 10, 2018.
2. Agreements
With respect to this matter, OMSC has entered into a plea agreement with the DOJ on issues related to filing and supplementing Medical Device Reports (MDRs) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding adverse events associated with the TJF-Q180V and agreed, among other things, that:
(i) it will enter a guilty plea to three criminal misdemeanors in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey for failure to submit, to the FDA, two required supplemental MDRs and one initial MDR for events in Europe between August 2012 and October 2014.
(ii) it will pay a criminal fine in the amount of U.S. $80 million (approximately [ ] yen) and criminal forfeiture in the amount of U.S. $5 million (approximately [ ] yen); and
(iii) it will undertake steps to enhance its regulatory compliance processes and procedures, and to regularly make certain certifications that the Company is meeting the expectations of the settlement.
3. Financial Impact and Future Outlook
With respect to this matter, we recorded a reserve in the amount of 9,653 million yen in the financial results for the cumulative second quarter of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019.
Further, no revision is made to the consolidated financial forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019 due to this matter.
The settlement does not impact the availability of Olympus products and services worldwide.
