Fed rate hike could come as early as June: Apollo’s chief economist

The Federal Reserve could start raising the cost to borrow money as early as June if historical averages are any guide, Torsten Slok, chief economist at investment firm Apollo Global Management, said in an email.

The somewhat contrarian view comes as traders don’t foresee any likelihood that the central bank would begin raising rates in June, according to the CME Fed Watch Tool. Futures markets also indicate a 92% chance that the Fed will keep its target range unchanged at 4.25% to 4.5%.

“The last Fed cut was in December, and the number of months from the final Fed cut to the first Fed hike has historically been as low as seven months, implying that the Fed could hike rates already in June,” Slok said in the email on Friday.

He pointed to a chart that shows a historical range of periods between the final rate cut to the first rate rise.

The Fed last year cut interest rates three times amid signs that inflation was falling. However, slower progress on inflation and indications that the labor market was stabilizing led the Fed to keep rates unchanged at its meeting in January.

Suez Canal Chief Expects Traffic Recovery to Start by End-March

Suez Canal Authority chief Osama Rabie said he expects traffic through the Egyptian waterway to gradually return to normal by late March and fully recover by mid-year, as long as the Gaza ceasefire holds up.

Yemen’s Houthis said they’d stop targeting US and UK ships in response to the pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas. Shipping companies, however, indicated it was still too early to plan a return.

Senate GOP Proposes Constitutional Amendment To Limit Size Of Supreme Court

by Matthew Vadum via The Epoch Times,

Republicans in the U.S. Senate proposed a new constitutional amendment on Feb. 7 that would prevent federal lawmakers from increasing the number of justices—currently set at nine—on the U.S. Supreme Court.

The new joint congressional resolution, the Keep Nine Amendment, was introduced after Democrats in the previous Congress proposed a series of measures to boost the number of justices and enforce ethics standards at the nation’s highest court. Republicans at the time criticized the legislation.

Congressional Democrats have been demanding ethics reforms in recent years as reports of justices not publicly disclosing gifts have surfaced. They have also grown increasingly incensed by Supreme Court rulings they disagree with on issues such as abortion, gun rights, affirmative action, environmental policy, and the power of the administrative state. Republicans have countered that efforts to regulate the court are unconstitutional and motivated by partisan animus.

The current limit of nine justices was established by the federal Judiciary Act of 1869. The number has not changed since then. Supreme Court justices are nominated by the sitting president and confirmation requires a simple majority vote by the Senate.

Amending the U.S. Constitution is difficult. Article V of the Constitution provides that an amendment can move forward only if it is approved by a two-thirds vote of both houses of Congress or by two-thirds of states participating in a special constitutional convention. It must then be ratified by the Legislatures of three-fourths of the states to become part of the Constitution.

The resolution states that the amendment would become effective if it is ratified “within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification.”

The Democrats’ “court-packing scheme would erase the legitimacy of the Supreme Court and destroy historic precedent,” Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement.

“The Court is a co-equal branch of government, and our Keep Nine Amendment will ensure that it remains independent from political pressure.”

Co-sponsor Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), said the amendment is needed to check Democrats’ “efforts to undermine the integrity of the Court.”

He said lawmakers on the other side of the aisle want “to use the Court to advance policy goals they can’t accomplish electorally.”

Among other co-sponsors of the amendment are Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), and Deb Fischer (R-Neb.).

Several bills have been introduced in Congress in recent years to expand the court beyond nine justices.

In September 2024, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) unveiled legislation to add six justices to the Supreme Court, raising the total number of members to 15.

“The Supreme Court is in crisis and bold solutions are necessary to restore the public trust,” Wyden said.

In May 2023, Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) introduced legislation to raise the cap on justices to 13.

“Our most fundamentally held freedoms are under attack from an illegitimate, far-right United States Supreme Court,” Markey said. “And if we fail to act, it will only get worse.”

The Epoch Times reached out for comment to the Democrat minority on the Senate Judiciary Committee. No reply was received by publication time.

Don't call it a comeback: Pfizer returns to Super Bowl with ad pledging to 'knock out' cancer

Last year marked the first time in Pfizer’s 175-year history that the drugmaker shelled out the requisite millions for a corporate spot during the Super Bowl broadcast. Now, it seems to be becoming something of an annual tradition.

Pfizer will once again debut a new promo during Sunday’s big game. Like last year’s commercial, the 2025 ad highlights the company’s overarching work in drug development rather than pushing any specific products. And, while the 2024 spot largely celebrated Pfizer’s history of advancing science before ending with a nod to “the next fight” against cancer, this year’s is focused squarely on that fight, centering around the on-screen message: “Hey cancer, we’re gonna knock you out.”

Dubbed “Knock Out,” the 60-second ad is set to air during the first quarter of the Sunday face-off between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

The commercial opens with a young cancer patient laying in a hospital bed and watching a boxing match. Hearing ring announcer Michael Buffer’s classic catchphrase “let’s get ready to rumble” seems to ignite the boy’s own fighting spirit: Suddenly clad in boxing gear of his own, he climbs out of bed, rings a bell to celebrate the end of his treatment and begins a triumphant victory lap that takes him through cheering crowds in the hospital and across town.

Throughout it all, LL Cool J’s 1990 hit “Mama Said Knock You Out” plays in the background. Though the rapper doesn’t appear in the commercial, a Pfizer spokesperson told Fierce Pharma Marketing that he and his wife Simone Smith, a cancer survivor, have teamed up with the company to share their personal cancer journey and raise awareness about the importance of early detection.

The ad ends with the boy returning to his parents at home. As the family embraces, text on-screen shares Pfizer’s oft-repeated mission of “fighting for 8 cancer breakthroughs by 2030.” The final frame features the company logo, its “Outdo Yesterday” slogan and the web URL for its PfizerForAll direct-to-consumer platform.

Pfizer’s 2024 Super Bowl spot reportedly beat out fellow pharma advertiser Astellas’ Veozah ad in terms of their respective engagement boosts following last year’s big game. This time around, Pfizer will go up against another Big Pharma heavyweight, Novartis, which has produced a star-studded commercial promoting regular breast cancer screening.

Similar to Novartis’ goal of inspiring cancer-preventing action with its prime-time promo, Pfizer's new ad is aimed not only at raising awareness but also at encouraging viewers to take charge of their health and learn about their own cancer risk, the company's spokesperson said.

That’s where the PfizerForAll mention comes in: The platform, which launched last summer to help patients make doctor appointments, find vaccines and order needed tests and treatments, now includes a link to the American Cancer Society’s CancerRisk360 assessment, which identifies visitors’ cancer risk levels and lists actions they can take to reduce their risk.

PfizerForAll initially focused on connecting patients with care for common conditions like migraine, COVID-19, flu, respiratory syncytial virus and pneumococcal pneumonia. Since then, in addition to the cancer risk questionnaire, the company has added resources around atrial fibrillation as well as a “Health Answers by Pfizer” chatbot that uses generative artificial intelligence to answer health and wellness questions. After launching in August, per the company, PfizerForAll racked up nearly 10 million page views in 2024.

As for the commercial’s pledge to deliver an octet of “cancer breakthroughs” by the end of the decade, Pfizer laid out that plan as part of its revamped oncology strategy in early 2024. As the company's spokesperson noted to Fierce Pharma Marketing this week, Pfizer is expecting a trio of regulatory decisions in prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and non-Hodgkin lymphoma this year.

"Worst Go First": Baltimore ICE Agents Arrest "MS-13 Terrorists" In Suburban Neighborhoods

Maryland's radical sanctuary state policies under Governor Wes Moore and the Democratic Party in Annapolis have unleashed public safety threats for law-abiding taxpayers in several counties.

Real America's Voice reporter Ben Bergquam joined ICE agents from the Baltimore branch on a ride-along as they targeted "MS-13 terrorists in suburban neighborhoods."

"Embedded with Baltimore ICE Field Office Director, Matthew Elliston and his team along with the Baltimore FBI office, Special Agent in Charge, Bill DelBagno, and the ATF," Bergquam wrote on X.

"Listen to what Matt says about sanctuary jurisdictions, and the crazy news we get after we picked up one of the MS-13 criminal illegals! These guys are all being aided and coached by leftist, activist groups and putting every one of your neighborhoods in danger."

Gov. Moore and the far-left lawmakers in Annapolis have prioritized time and taxpayer monies on comforting illegal aliens in the state rather than properly addressing the public safety threat of "MS-13 terrorists" roaming city streets and urban neighborhoods. Marylanders are disgusted with local Democrats in the state as sanctuary policies have backfired.

In addition to the public safety disaster, Gov. Moore is leading the state into a fiscal crisis. The state's credit outlook is "negative" amid repeated calls by Democrats to raise taxes, which will only increase the exodus of the tax base, thus placing the state on a dangerous death spiral—similar to Illinois—in the next decade.

Let's not also forget Democrats in the state have mismanaged the power grid with disastrous green policies that have sparked a power crisis. Taxpayers are now furious this winter that their power bills spiked uncountably.

The little hope that Marylanders have in ending this failed progressive nightmare comes from Trump's deportation initiative, carried out by ICE and other federal agencies, to restore national security.

Meanwhile, a Republican sheriff of Frederick County told Newsweek last month that Gov. Moore and leftist politicians are making it their "obligation" to protect illegal alien communities.

Marylanders did not vote for radical leftist politicians to flood the state with "MS-13 terrorists" and illegal aliens. Democrats are still not reading the room in the era of Trump, doubling down on illegal aliens and wokeism.

If Maryland gets a credit downgrade under Moore's tenure - then good luck trying to make a bid for president in 2028.

India's Modi to discuss buying more US oil and defense equipment with Trump: report

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will discuss slashing tariffs and buying up more energy and defense supplies from the U.S. when he meets President Donald Trump next week, Bloomberg reported Saturday.

Modi is scheduled to land in Washington on February 12, and likely to meet with Trump on February 13, the report said, citing Indian officials familiar with the matter.

Meetings with U.S. business executives, including billionaire Elon Musk, have also been proposed, but nothing has been confirmed yet, the report added.

New Delhi is prepared to phase out some tariffs imposed in 2019 in retaliation to Trump's trade action during his first term in office, the report said. The South Asian nation will also look for U.S. investment in nuclear projects.

The world's fifth-largest economy might also indicate its willingness to buy more U.S. oil and defense equipment such as fighter jets and drones, the report said.
