Mamdani’s Democratic Socialists of America say will expel members who oppose boycotting Israel

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) party, of which Zohran Mamdani is a prominent member, has doubled down on its extremism — supporting armed struggle against Israel and threatening to expel members who do not comply with its hard-line dictates against the Jewish state, The Post has learned.

The DSA adopted the new resolutions “For a Fighting Anti-Zionist DSA,” at its biannual national conference in Chicago last month, according to documents viewed by The Post.

As a member of the party, mayoral candidate Mamdani could face pressure from its leadership body to adhere to its stance — which could dramatically affect his campaign.

Members, including lawmakers backed by the party, now face expulsion if they oppose the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement against Israel or work with lobbyists affiliated with pro-Israel groups, such as the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), among others, the documents say.

Francesca Maviglia (left) has been involved in numerous anti-Israel protests and was one of the sponsors of the resolution to back armed struggle against Israel at a recent Democratic Socialists of America convention in Chicago.KeyWiki

Members can even be expelled if they support Israel’s right to defend itself, according to the DSA literature.

The resolution “unequivocally affirms” the principals set forth by the Palestinian National Council in 1977 — known as “al-Thawabit” — that emphasizes escalating armed struggle and “resistance by any means necessary,” according to the documents.

“This resolution draws a clear internal red line and signals intensifying ideological rigidity, intolerance, and radicalism around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within the DSA,” said a recent report from the Network Contagion Research Institute, a nonprofit that tracks extremism.

“These developments warrant close monitoring, both for their implications on NYC’s electoral landscape and their potential role in mainstreaming antisemitic or extremist ideological frameworks within US political discourse.”

Mamdani has recently made moves away from some DSA policies, saying last week: “My platform is not the same as national DSA” at a press event.

Among the sponsors of the resolution is Francesca Maria Maviglia, co-chair of the Connecticut Democratic Socialists of America and part of the group’s 25-member National Political Committee, its highest elected body, according to the documents.

Originally from Bologna, Italy, Maviglia has a long history of supporting anti-Israel causes and was co-founder of the Connecticut Palestine Solidarity Coalition.

In 2018, she was a member of the Yale chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. During the Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, Maviglia posted on X, “europe will fall too,” in response to a post condemning the attacks. She is currently listed as a Postgraduate Research Associate at the Yale School of Medicine.

Maviglia did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.

Another backer of the anti-Israel resolution is New York-based DSA National Political Committee member Ahmed Husain, who describes himself on a DSA-affiliated website as an “immigrant [who] began organizing during the Arab Spring,” uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East which happened in 2011.

In June, Husain spoke at a reception in New York welcoming a Chinese organization from Guizhou Province and calling on the DSA to forge closer relationships with Communist China.

In a June article he wrote for Partisan magazine, Husain criticized Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and former New York Congressman Jamaal Bowman as “enablers of Israel’s genocide.” He also criticized New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for refusing to back Palestinian activists in her district.

“Six years and two re-elections later, AOC finds herself out of step with the socialists who catapulted her to fame,” said Husain. “She has been hounded by pro-Palestine activists through her district for her initial reluctance to call Israel’s campaign of mass murder in Gaza, with over 50,000 dead in 8 months, what it is: a genocide.”

Attempts to reach Husain were unsuccessful and his social media accounts appear to have been deactivated.

The DSA annual convention, which is held every two years, took place August 8 to 10 with a keynote address by Rashida Tlaib, an anti-Israel “Squad” Rep. who was raising money for Mamdani’s super PAC at the conference.

Mamdani’s campaign did not reply to a request for comment Thursday.

Trump Deploys F-35s To Puerto Rico Airfield After Pair Of Venezuelan Jets Buzz US Warship

The Pentagon has warned Venezuela after two of its military aircraft buzzed a United States Navy ship in international waters, as an apparent show of force after a US naval build-up in the region.

The pair of warplanes, identified in various media as F-16 jets, flew over over the guided-missile destroyer Jason Dunham in the southern Caribbean Sea on Thursday, and while the US ship did not engage the aircraft, a subsequent Department of Defense statement called it "highly provocative" and "an attempt to interfere with our counter-narco-terror operations."

US Navy file image

"Today, two Maduro regime military aircraft flew near a US Navy vessel in international waters," the Pentagon said in a post on X. "The cartel running Venezuela is strongly advised not to pursue any further effort to obstruct, deter or interfere with counter-narcotics and counter-terror operations carried out by the US military," the Pentagon said.

This was clearly President Maduro's response to Tuesday's US strike on an alleged drug trafficking speedboat in the same waters and general posture of saber-rattling. President Trump says the blown-up boat belonged to a criminal organization tied to Maduro, and the rare military action resulted in the deaths of eleven people.

However, some international monitors have noted that if those slain were civilians, this amounts to an extra-judicial killing, also given there was no apparent attempt to intercept the vessel or arrest those aboard. This is likely what's behind the sudden frequent use of the term 'narco-terrorists' by the US administration.

The sudden terror pretext and label makes it easier to justify direct military action in front of the American people, who have become generally wary of the potential for new, unnecessary wars and foreign adventurism abroad - even if in Latin America.

Maduro has ordered a heightened defense posture due to the US sending some eight naval ships, with Venezuela’s Noticias Venevision news outlet quoting him as saying it is the "first time in history that the communal units of the militia will be activated, spanning the national map from north to south, from east to west, down to the last community."

But the White House is answering further by deploying even more assets near Venezuela in the dangerous environment of rising tit-for-tat tensions.

President Trump has newly ordered ten F-35 fighter jets to be deployed to Puerto Rico, the American territory and Caribbean archipelago, in what's becoming (or rather, being sold to the public) an all-out Pentagon war on drug cartels. Reports say the advanced aircraft will be in position by week's end. They will join the at least eight warships and one nuclear-powered fast attack submarine to the eastern Caribbean, which are also there.

Just ahead of this new jet deployment, Trump warned after hitting the drug boat, "Please let this serve as notice to anybody even thinking about bringing drugs into the United States of America."

What's really going on here? One trend being reflected, as we've long previewed, is that President Trump's worldview is for greater coordination of national and hemispheric defense across the Americas, hence the push for stronger economic integration between the United States and Canada, coupled with a hardened defense perimeter stretching from the Arctic to the Panama Canal. Monroe Doctrine on steroids?

But this surge in major defense assets off Venezuela's coast could also more likely be about renewing regime change efforts targeting Caracas, after some apparent failed externally-backed coup efforts which happened during Trump's first term. After all, the 'war on drugs' is a losing proposition in the historic US policy playbook (and ironically the CIA was a hidden hand which helped fuel drugs on American streets), given it had been on for past many decades, and deploying warships and stealth jets is hardly the right tool set for something the DEA and Coast Guard have conventionally done.

There's also the question of to what degree one takes seriously the US administration's claims concerning Maduro and his socialist country's role in shipping dangerous substances into the United States. Why not a force concentration against the Mexican drug cartels instead - or at least in parallel? Of course, Mexico is not home to the world's largest known reserves of oilas Venezuela is, and consideration of what's really going on can't happen without that key fact front and center.

'Massachusetts bucks HHS, issuing its own COVID guidelines'

Amid national confusion and consternation about recent changes to COVID-19 vaccine guidelines in the United States, Governor Maura Healey has made Massachusetts the first state in the Union to require insurers to cover the vaccine for everyone.

In a budget supplement filed last month, Healey also changed state law and policy to permit the Massachusetts Department of Health, rather than the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunisation Practices, to dictate vaccine permissions and recommendations.

“Massachusetts has the best health care in the world,” Healy said in a statement. “We won’t let Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy get between patients and their doctors. When the federal government fails to protect public health, Massachusetts will step up. The actions we are announcing today will make sure people can continue to get the vaccines they need and want in Massachusetts.”

In addition to mandating insurance coverage of vaccines, the administration is working with CVS and Walgreens to make sure COVID vaccine appointments are available soon to Bay Staters.

Last week, the FDA announced that new COVID-19 vaccine formulations would only be approved for those over 65 or those at high risk due to other conditions. Previously they were available to everyone over 6 months of age due to emergency authorisation.

While HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy has maintained that the vaccine is still available to those who want it, in practice the combination of the narrow FDA approval and open questions about pending recommendations from the CDC have kept the boosters from being available in pharmacies and doctors’ offices, even for those who are over 65.

This is partly because, as a matter of course, those recommendations affect how many doses are created, ordered, and delivered, as well as whether the shots are covered by insurers.

At a Congressional hearing yesterday, Senators from both sides of the aisle crticised the policy changes, including Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren who called on Kennedy to resign at the end of a heated exchange about vaccine availability.

Massachusetts, a liberal state with a Democratic governor and a Democrat-controlled legislature, is the first to take this level of action in opposition to HHS’s COVID vaccine pivot, but it likely won’t be the last. According to the Boston Globe, Massachusetts is working with Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Delaware to coordinate a consistent regional vaccine policy, and similar discussions are happening in Vermont, Maine, New Jersey, and New York as well as on the west coast in California, Oregon, and Washington. On the other hand, the state of Florida recently announced a planned end to all vaccine mandates.

FDA launches green list to help stop illegal imported GLP-1 drug ingredients entering US market

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today established a “green list” import alert to help stop potentially dangerous GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from unverified foreign sources from entering the U.S. market. This is part of the agency’s decisive steps to safeguard consumers from illegal GLP-1 active ingredients imported from overseas to ensure patient safety and a secure drug supply chain.

Certain GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are FDA-approved for specific uses such as treating type 2 diabetes and, in certain cases, chronic weight management. However, the agency is aware that some patients are turning to compounded versions of these drugs, which are not approved by the FDA. To protect patients who use these compounded drugs, the green list will include GLP-1 APIs from facilities the agency has inspected or evaluated that appear to be in compliance with the FDA’s rigorous standards – standards applicable to all APIs manufactured in the U.S. APIs from other sources are subject to detention without physical examination.

“Americans should be confident that the prescription drugs they take are safe,” said FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. “By strengthening oversight of imported APIs and cracking down on illegal drugs entering the U.S., we are taking aggressive action to protect consumers from poor-quality or dangerous GLP-1 drugs.”

“Our priority is protecting public health by ensuring all active ingredients used in GLP-1 drugs are obtained from compliant manufacturers,” said George Tidmarsh, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “Targeting illegal foreign GLP-1 active ingredients at the border is a critical part of this work.”

The FDA previously identified serious concerns with compounded versions of semaglutide and tirzepatide, including dosing errors, use of unapproved salt forms and adverse events—some requiring hospitalization.

The agency will continue to work with state regulators, monitor the market, and take enforcement actions as necessary to prevent unsafe or fraudulent GLP-1 drugs from reaching U.S. consumers.

Kenvue sees ‘no causal link’ between acetaminophen use in pregnancy and autism

In a statement issued to media outlets after The Wall Street Journal reported that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to link pregnant women’s use of the pain killer Tylenol to autism, Kenvue (KVUE) said: “Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of the people who use our products. We have continuously evaluated the science and continue to believe there is no causal link between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism.” Kenvue adds that it advises expecting mothers to speak to healthcare professionals before taking any over-the-counter medications, including acetaminophen.

Harvard: Using acetaminophen during pregnancy may increase children’s autism and ADHD risk

When children are exposed to acetaminophen—also known by the brand name Tylenol or as paracetamol—during pregnancy, they may be more likely to develop neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) including autism and ADHD, according to a new study.

The study was published August 14 in BMC Environmental Health. Andrea Baccarelli, dean of the faculty at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and professor of environmental health, was senior author. The study was led by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and also included co-authors from other institutions.

The researchers analyzed results from 46 previous studies—representing data from over 100,000 participants—that investigated the potential link between prenatal acetaminophen use and subsequent NDDs in children. The researchers used the Navigation Guide Systematic Review methodology—a gold-standard framework for synthesizing and evaluating environmental health data—which enabled them to conduct a rigorous, comprehensive analysis that supported evidence of an association between acetaminophen exposure during pregnancy and increased incidence of NDDs.

The researchers noted that while steps should be taken to limit acetaminophen use, the drug is important for treating maternal fever and pain, which can also harm children. “We recommend judicious acetaminophen use—lowest effective dose, shortest duration—under medical guidance, tailored to individual risk-benefit assessments, rather than a broad limitation,” they wrote.

Baccarelli noted in the “competing interests” section of the paper that he has served as an expert witness for a plaintiff in a case involving potential links between acetominophen use during pregnancy and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Kenvue Sinks After Report RFK Jr. to Link Autism

Kenvue Inc.’s shares fell after the Wall Street Journal reported that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is likely to link the company’s Tylenol painkiller to autism.

The report from Kennedy is expected this month, said the paper, citing people familiar with the matter.
