Justice Department Reaches Settlement in Baltimore Bridge Collapse

 The Justice Department reached a settlement with the owner and operator of the containership that caused the deadly collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

Under terms of the settlement, Grace Ocean and Synergy Marine agreed Thursday to pay over $100 million to resolve the department's civil claim, filed last month, which alleged the two Singaporean corporations ignored safety issues that resulted in the vessel colliding into the span after losing power.

Grace Ocean was the registered owner of the ship, called the Dali, while Synergy Marine managed it. Neither company immediately responded to requests for comment.

The money from the settlement will go to the Treasury Department, as well as to the budgets of several federal agencies directly affected by bridge collapse and response, according to the Justice Department.

The settlement doesn't include damages for reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Federal, state and local agencies spent weeks responding to the collapse, which occurred in March and created a bottleneck at the crucial shipping port.
