The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) intends to take steps to end all gender transition-related care for minors, as revealed in a call with reporters on Thursday.
The main step towards the ban is to rule out federal Medicare and Medicaid funding for hospitals that offer gender affirming care, including puberty blockers, hormone therapy and gender reaffirming surgeries. A department official noted in the call that the initiative is aimed at ensuring "the federal government in no way funds directly gender transition procedures on minors."
The HHS head Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other department officials confirmed the initiative and provided the public with details during a press conference.
