Right-wing candidate Jose Antonio Kast won Chile's presidential election after establishing a decisive lead and prompting communist candidate Jeannette Jara to concede defeat.
This was the former congressman's third presidential race, following his advancement to the 2021 runoff, where he lost to Gabriel Boric. The 59-year-old Kast is the leader of the Republican Party, which he himself founded.
"Democracy spoke loud and clear. I just communicated with the President-elect @joseantoniokast to wish him success for the good of Chile," his opponent, Jara, wrote on X Sunday shortly after the results. "To those who supported us and were rallied by our candidacy, rest assured that we will continue working to advance a better life in our homeland," she added.
