The White House is weighing a plan to purchase the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in a move that could torpedo British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's deal to hand sovereignty of the territory to the island nation, the Telegraph reported on Sunday.
US officials have drafted a proposal to bypass London and secure direct control of Diego Garcia, the strategically vital joint UK-US military base in the Indian Ocean. The idea has been raised with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has brought it to President Trump's attention.
The base at Diego Garcia puts Iran within striking distance and supports long-range bomber operations, including B-2 stealth missions against Tehran.
