European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Friday the exact date when the European Union will open the first negotiations cluster in the accession process with Ukraine and Moldova, after previously saying that it would happen soon. The event will take place on Monday, June 15, at the first Intergovernmental Conference, with all member states agreeing to it.
"This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges. And a signal that the EU's offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatchable. Enlargement is a strategic choice. By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security and prosperity across our continent," Von der Leyen said in a statement.
