The Trump administration is considering reducing the number of warships and aircraft it provides for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Europe, with a third of its fighter jets previously available to the EU being pulled, The New York Times reported on Friday, citing two senior European officials.
According to the report, the United States plans to reduce the number of its F-16 and F-15E fighter jets from 150 to 100, and the number of its maritime reconnaissance aircraft from 26 to 15, while completely cutting the eight refueling tanker jets it had previously made available to Europe. Washington also reportedly intends to reallocate a missile-launching submarine, an aircraft carrier, and several warships and jets, as well as one of two groups of bombers it previously dedicated to Europe.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously said that his country will decrease its troop presence in Europe due to Washington's military needs elsewhere, including in the Middle East.
