Trump taps ex-SEC head as national intelligence director

United States President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he nominated Jay Clayton, former Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) chairman, to act as the new director of national intelligence (DNI).

"Few people anywhere in the Legal Community are respected at the level of Jay. I encourage the United States Senate to confirm Jay as soon as possible," he wrote in a post on Truth Social. Previously, Clayton also acted as the head of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP. He is currently working as the US attorney for the Southern District of New York.

The announcement comes after the House of Representatives failed to pass a short-term extension of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act's (FISA) Section 702, with Democrats complaining about Trump picking Bill Pulte as acting DNI.
