Blakeman pledges to stop solar development on upstate farmland, Hochul’s ‘solar scam’

GOP candidate for governor Bruce Blakeman is launching an ad campaign attacking Gov. Kathy Hochul over the expansion of upstate solar farms.

"Kathy Hochul’s solar sprawl is cannibalizing our state’s most precious resource: our farmland,” the Blakeman campaign wrote in a statement claiming that New York lost 500 farms in 2024 and 2025, comprising 100,000 "acres of land."

"We cannot sit by while Hochul allows the best soil in our state to be bulldozed for corporate profit and solar panels that don’t solve the state’s energy crisis,” Blakeman claimed calling New York’s efforts to increase solar generating capacity a “solar scam.”

Blakeman has hinged part of his campaign on a pledge to cut New Yorkers’ utility bills by half as electricity and natural gas rates are set to soar across large swaths of the state in the coming years.
