Biotech week ahead, July 26

Biotech stocks rebounded in the week ended July 23, thanks to the broader market strength. The sector also benefitted from the optimism that was set in motion by the solid start to the pharma reporting season.

Big pharma companies, including Johnson & Johnson JNJ 1.06% and Novartis AG NVS 0.56% reported forecast-beating results and issued positive guidance. Preannouncements from the space were also largely positive.

Moderna, Inc.'s MRNA 7.84% buoyancy spilled over into the week. The stock went from strength to strength and ended the week with a gain of over 21%. On Wednesday, the company was added to the S&P 500 Index.

Ardelyx, Inc.

ARDX 5.08% lost about 77% of its market capitalization after the Food and Drug Administration flagged potential deficiencies in its tenapanor new drug application as a treatment for hyperphosphatemia.

Pfizer, Inc.PFE 0.6% also faced a regulatory setback as the FDA communicated a delay in the decisions for its atopic dermatitis treatment and Xeljanz/Xeljanz XR for the treatment of adults with ankylosing spondylitis.

Albireo Pharma, Inc. ALBO 2.99%, however, received back-to-back approvals, both from the FDA and the European Medicines Agency, for Bylvay to treat pruritus in all subtypes of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis, a rare, progressive liver disease.

The week also witnessed a slew of initial public offerings by biopharma, medical device and diagnostics companies.

Here are the key catalysts that a biotech invest may do well to focus on, in the unfolding week:

Synaptogenix, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPX), an emerging biopharmaceutical company focused on developing therapies for neurodegenerative diseases, today announced that its abstract has been accepted at the Alzheimer's Association International Conference ("AAIC"), which will be held online and in-person July 26-30, 2021.

A Simple Strategy For Making Your Trading Better

Here is a simple scheme for making yourself better as a trader month by month:

1)  Review your trading for the month.  Keeping statistics on your trading is an excellent way of doing this.  How many winning and losing trades did you have?  What were the average sizes of your winning and losing trades?  How did your largest winning trades compare with your largest losers?  What ideas were responsible for the winning and losing trades?

2)  Identify the one thing you did best during the month and identify the one thing from the month that you most need to improve.  That means comparing your best and worst trades and/or your best and worst trading days.

3)  In the spirit of FIGS--focused, intensive, goal setting--identify the one thing you'll do each day to do more of what you did best and correct the thing you did worst.  This has to be a daily plan that you will tackle each trading session and that will involve building on your strength and addressing your weakness.

4)  Keep a daily report card of how well you accomplished the two goals set for the week and how you can extend your progress the next day.

5)  Repeat this process, setting new goals, each month.

You are most likely to become consistent in your trading if you are consistent in working on your trading.  The consistency and intensity of your work on yourself will shape your rate of progression.

Philip Morris to end cigarette sales in UK in next decade

Tobacco giant Philip Morris will stop selling cigarettes in the UK within the next 10 years, its chief executive has revealed.

Jacek Olczak said that the plans were part of the company's drive to phase out traditional cigarette smoking.

Smokers will instead be encouraged to switch to modern alternatives, such as e-cigarettes or heated tobacco devices, which are considered less harmful.

"I want to allow this company to leave smoking behind," Olczak told The Mail on Sunday.

"I think in the UK, 10 years from now maximum, you can completely solve the problem of smoking."

Philip Morris' best-selling brand Marlboro will be included in the move, meaning the cigarettes will no longer be available on shop shelves in Britain.

"It will disappear," Olczak said. "The first choice for consumers is they should quit smoking.

"But if they don't, the second best choice is to let them switch to the better alternatives."

In a video shared on the firm's website, Olczak said: "Our objective is to fully leave smoking combustible cigarettes behind to become one day a smoke-free company."

"We also take it very seriously as the leader in the industry," he added, saying they're striving to"transform the entire industry".

"To achieve that, we need collaborations with the governments, with the regulators, with the NGOs and the public at large," he said.

It comes after the UK government announced plans in 2019 for England to go "smoke-free" by 2030, which includes reducing the prevalence of cigarette smoking among different age groups.

In Scotland, the target is 2034, while Northern Ireland and Wales have not yet set a date.

In practice, “smoke-free” involves reaching 5% average adult smoking prevalence, according to the UK Parliament website

The government has acknowledged that this goal will be “extremely challenging” to achieve, the website says.

Over the last 35 years, smoking rates in Britain have halved with currently around 15% of UK adults smoke cigarettes, according to Cancer Research UK.
