Ginkgo, Texas A&M in US grant for Genomic Animal Research to Prevent Zoonotic Disease Spillover
Ginkgo Bioworks (NYSE: DNA), which is building the leading platform for cell programming and biosecurity, and Texas A&M University today announced they have been jointly awarded a research grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) via the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (NIFA AFRI) to study SARS-CoV-2 in white-tailed deer populations in Texas.
This research is one of the first at-scale studies that will conduct widespread DNA sequencing of white-tailed deer in Texas. White-tailed deer are a farmed animal species that have historically had high positivity rates of SARS-CoV-2 in wild populations throughout the United States. As part of the study, Ginkgo's biosecurity and public health unit, Concentric by Ginkgo, and researchers from Texas A&M's School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences aim to identify if, when, and how both farmed and wild white-tailed deer become infected with SARS-CoV-2 and how this spread of disease can impact other animal species, including humans.
Texas A&M will screen both historic and newly collected samples for the presence of the virus, which will then be sequenced and analyzed by Concentric. Results of the research can give the agriculture and livestock industries the data points needed to develop infrastructure in response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in deer and future zoonotic disease outbreaks impacting livestock

"Here's What's Really Going On": Elon Musk Livestreams Southern Border Chaos
Earlier this week, Kentucky GOP Sen. Mitch Glitch McConnell said, "Providing assistance for Ukrainians to defeat the Russians - that's the number one priority of the United States right now - according to most Republicans."
On Thursday, Elon Musk asked on X: "Why do so many American politicians from both parties care 100 times more about the Ukraine border than the USA border?"
Musk asks such a question because, in recent weeks, the southern border crisis has once again erupted in chaos (read: here & here), primarily in Eagle Pass, Texas. And at the same time, the corporate media and the Biden administration downplay the massive influx of illegals into the US.
In a search for truth, the world's richest man encouraged millions of his followers to become citizen journalists to uncover and share the truth about what's happening not just at the border but across the nation while corporate media and political elites in Washington, DC, 'distract, pretend, and divide' Americans.
Musk recorded a livestream on X at the Eagle Pass border crossing on Thursday evening to show "What's really going on." We previewed days ago that Musk was planning to visit the border.
Besides some right-leaning media outlets, there has been a blackout of news coverage by the corporate press about the latest border crisis flare-up. Musk's mission on the border yesterday was to show how X can be a powerful tool to share real-time coverage about what's really happening on the ground that entirely bypasses legacy and dying corporate media outlets.
Musk's reporting of the border crisis on X doesn't stop with his livestream. He quoted another post showing illegals crossing the border while saying: "The border crisis is worse every day! New York City is buckling under the load already."
And he commented, "!!" on another post that shows some stunning data about the number of illegals the Biden administration has allowed to pour into the country.
Meanwhile, an MSNBC host was triggered by Musk's reporting of the border: "Why does the world's richest businessman sound like a MAGA bot, spewing out automated right-wing talking points?"
Since when is reporting reality a "MAGA bot, spewing out automated right-wing talking points"? Yet more evidence the corporate press does not want the majority of Americans to understand the truth while they divide and conquer the populace.
Musk is correct: If you want to defeat the corporate press - become a citizen journalist and utilize the First Amendment. We all have smartphones. It's very easy.
Hating Inflation? Follow Zimbabwe’s Playbook to Make it Go Away
- Inflation slows after methodology focuses on US dollar use
- Change trims inflation rate from above 175% in June to sub-20%
Zimbabwe, long a poster child for runaway inflation, has raised eyebrows by declaring a dramatic slowdown in price pressures.
The National Statistics Agency on Thursday announced the annual rate of inflation fell to 18.4% in September, compared with 77.2% a month before, after it revised the methodology used to calculate the number.
Raymond James iffy on Biomarin
Raymond James initiated coverage on BioMarin Pharmaceuticals Inc BMRN with a Market Perform rating, noting sparsity in near-term growth drivers.
Analysts Danielle Brill and Alex Nackenof say the launch of Roctavian and Voxzogo are the company's key growth drivers.
While Voxzogo's growth is expected to continue over the next few years, they worry about its longer outlook given competitive treatment options that are advancing in the clinic, including BridgeBio Pharma Inc BBIO, Ascendis Pharma A/S ASND.
The analyst also expects a slow ramp for Roctavian, given the hemophilia doc survey work pointing to limited plans for early adoption.
BioMarin has guided Roctavian sales of $50-150 million in 2023 revenues. While the company may meet the bar for 2023 (with some small pent-up demand), overall appetite from the hemophilia community for the product is low, says the analyst.
Voxzogo launch in achondroplasia has been a success, with ~$380 -430 million in revenues expected this year.
Though there is ~20% upside potential for achondroplasia alone – given the recent advances from competitor BBIO's much more convenient oral FGFR3-inhibitor, Voxzogo's future is in jeopardy.
BioMarin's shares will remain under pressure until BBIO reports 12-month data (anticipated early-mid 24).
Raymond James also questions the potential value of BMRN's two clinical-stage pipeline assets: BMN331 for HAE and BMN255 for hyperoxaluria.
