Harris-Walz campaign to unveil mini drone show attacking Trump

The Harris-Walz campaign plans a drone show about two miles away from the debate stage to taunt former President Donald Trump.

The display was slated to take place at the Philadelphia Art Museum between 8:05 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. and feature messaging from the campaign bashing Trump.

Messaging in the drone show will echo other ads the campaign has rolled out, including one this morning that knocked Trump's "weird obsession over his small crowd sizes."

European firms doubt China has credible plan to turn economy around, lobby group warns

European firms in China doubt the government has a credible plan to boost demand in the ailing economy or will carry out long-promised reforms, diminishing their appetite to invest in the country, a European business lobby group said on Wednesday.

The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said in the latest edition of its Position Paper that many of its more than 1,700 member companies were now reconciling themselves to the fact that the problems they face may have become permanent features rather than "growing pains" of an emerging market.

"A sentiment is emerging at company headquarters and among shareholders that the returns on China investments are no longer commensurate with the risks faced," the chamber said, noting that profit margins in China had sunk for around two thirds of its members to equal to or below the global average.

In 2023, EU foreign direct investment flows to China dropped by 29% from the previous year to 6.4 billion euros ($7.06 billion), European Commission data shows.

"With many other markets offering greater predictability and legal certainty along with the same return on investment, continuing to invest at previous levels in the China market is simply becoming harder to justify," the chamber said.

European firms must wrestle with Chinese competitors receiving unfair subsidies, a highly politicised business environment, President Xi Jinping's heightened focus on national security, and perennial market access and regulatory barriers, the chamber said.

But the "central concern" was China's economic slowdown.

After a dismal second quarter, policymakers signalled they were ready to deviate from their playbook of pouring funds into infrastructure, instead targeting fresh stimulus at households.

But economists are still waiting on more specific plans to reinvigorate the $19 trillion economy beyond a pledge from the top-decision making body of the ruling Communist Party that it will do so and a subsidised trade-in scheme for consumer goods.

"The intention to 'step up efforts to develop a complete domestic demand system' is asserted, but the document contains nothing concrete as to how consumption will be stimulated," the chamber said, referring to a plan put out following the Party's so-called third plenum in July.

"Given that the total amount budgeted works out to approximately 210 yuan ($29.52) per capita, only a portion of which will reach household consumers, it is unlikely that this scheme alone will significantly increase domestic consumption," the chamber added, pointing to the trade-in programme.

BASF, Maersk, Siemens and Volkswagen are among the members of the chamber.

Weight-loss market to see 16 new drugs by 2029, report estimates

The market for weight-loss treatments is expected to see 16 new drugs vying for a slice of the lucrative business currently dominated by Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, according to estimates from analysts at Morningstar and Pitchbook.

In a joint report published on Monday, analysts estimated the market for obesity treatments could expand to $200 billion by 2031. The 16 drugs could launch by 2029, with roughly $70 billion of the GLP-1 market coming from these new challengers.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Surging demand for Novo's Wegovy and Lilly's Zepbound has sparked interest among competitors to test their own weight-loss treatments. Companies such as Amgen and Pfizer are currently testing their drug candidates in clinical trials.

These developments come amid criticism from lawmakers over the high costs associated with these medications. The new entrants, however, are expected to drive down prices as they vie for market share, according to the report.

CONTEXT

The potential new treatments include those from Boehringer Ingelheim and Zealand Pharma, along with competitors from Roche, Amgen and Pfizer, according to the report, provided that the drugs clear clinical trials.

Other entrants include those by Structure Therapeutics, Viking Therapeutics and Altimmune, along with next-generation drugs by Novo and Lilly.

Analysts, last year, had forecast the obesity market would be $170 billion by 2031, but have recently raised their estimates, partly due to anticipated higher diabetes market penetration.

The report projects 41% individuals with diabetes and nearly one-quarter of nondiabetic obesity patients will be on a GLP-1 drug by 2031.

WHAT'S NEXT

Analysts expect significant acquisitions by major pharmaceutical companies in the obesity sector over the next 18 months, targeting smaller companies specializing in obesity drug development.

Potential acquisition targets include firms such as Structure, Viking and Altimmune.

Private companies such as NodThera, Corteria and Diasome have a higher-than-50% chance of being acquired, according to PitchBook data.

Russia is close to signing new bilateral treaty with Iran, Shoigu says

Russia has nearly completed the required procedures to sign a new bilateral treaty with Iran soon, state news agency TASS quoted top security official Sergei Shoigu as saying on Tuesday.

"We look forward to the imminent conclusion of a new basic interstate treaty. We are completing the internal procedures necessary for the preparation of documents for signing by the presidents," Shoigu said.

Russia has cultivated closer ties with Iran and other states hostile towards the United States, such as North Korea, in the two and a half years since the start of the Ukraine war.

The United States accuses both countries of aiding Russia's war effort, something Moscow denies. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier on Tuesday that Russia had received ballistic missiles from Iran and was likely to use them within weeks.

A senior Iranian official on Monday denied reports that Tehran had supplied Moscow with such missiles.

Russia has said for some time that it intends to sign a major partnership treaty with the Islamic Republic, but Shoigu's statement was the strongest sign yet that such a deal is imminent.

Illegal Alien MS-13 Gangster Kills Girl, Then Enrolls In Maryland High School

Investigative journalist Chris Papst of Fox45 News' Project Baltimore revealed that a Maryland high school unknowingly allowed an illegal alien MS-13 gang member, at the center of a murder investigation, to enroll after local, state, and federal authorities failed to inform the school's administration of the student's criminal background. Tragic events like this should never be happening in the first world. Yet, the news cycle is becoming inundated with these types of horrific events because of disastrous open southern border policies pushed by the Biden-Harris team.

The story begins with illegal alien and MS-13 gang member Walter Martinez, who was 16 years old and murdered Kayla Hamilton in 2022. Months before the murder, Martinez walked across the open southern border and was apprehended by the US Border Patrol. He was then sent to a sponsor in Maryland.

Fox's Papst laid out a timeline of Martinez's illegal entry into America to the murder of an American citizen to his time at a Maryland public school.

In March 2022, Martinez entered the United States illegally through Texas as an unaccompanied minor. He was apprehended by Border Patrol and sent to live with a sponsor in Maryland.

  • By July 2022, Martinez moved to a mobile home in Aberdeen where he later killed Kayla.

  • By the fall of 2022, as police waited for the DNA results, Martinez had been placed in foster care with Child and Protective Services. He then enrolled at Edgewood High School.

  • In January 2023, the DNA results came back, and Martinez was arrested.

  • In August 2024, he pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 70 years in jail.

The victim's mother, Tammy Nobles, told Papst, "When I start from the very beginning and get to the very end, they're like, 'wow, that is a really crazy story," adding, "And I say, 'it is a crazy story. But it's a true story.' It's the worst pain that a parent can ever get."

Nobles explained the illegal alien "wrapped a cord around my daughter's neck and her mouth, then just left her on the floor, like trash."

Martinez, a native of Salvador, was the top suspect and was detained by police shortly after Kayla Hamilton's death. There was surveillance video and an audio recording placing him at the scene of the crime. Martinez was read his Miranda Rights, and police sent out his DNA for testing. However, testing took six months, and while that was underway, he was enrolled into a Maryland public school, surrounded by hundreds of kids.

"It makes me angry," Nobles said, emphasizing, "You're sitting there putting this monster into high school with other people's children, and you're putting children at risk. Look what he did to Kayla."

Papst pointed out, "Think about this for a minute. After Kayla was murdered, Martinez was quickly identified as a primary suspect, according to charging documents. As a minor and MS-13 gang member in the country illegally, several organizations were involved in the investigation: Aberdeen Police Department, Maryland State Police, FBI, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, and Child and Protective Services."

Yet none of the local, state, and federal agencies mentioned above informed the school system; nevertheless, the parents of the school about the illegal alien's criminal status.

The story is crazy and absolutely disheartening, and it was made possible by the Biden-Harris team, who allowed this to happen.

The nation is sleepwalking into disaster.

Disney investors are glued to CEO succession outcome: Goldman Sachs analyst

Who lands the Disney (DIS) CEO gig after Bob Iger remains a hot-button issue with institutional investors.

"When I talk to investors, succession planning is incredibly important because it dictates the strategy of the company. And I think over the last few years prior to Mr. Iger coming back into his current role, we've seen a few missteps perhaps on the film and TV studio side in particular, where there has been some market share loss," Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Ng told Yahoo Finance at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology Conference on Tuesday.

Ng rates Disney's stock at a Buy rating.

Added Ng, "One observation that I'll make is that they have an incredibly deep, deep bench of talented executives across each of their business lines, theme parks, film and TV studios, and obviously at ESPN."

There are reportedly four internal candidates being considered for the coveted position, which Iger held from 2005 to 2020 before returning in November 2022: entertainment division co-chiefs Dana Walden and Alan Bergman, parks division head Josh D'Amaro, and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro. Walden is seen as having a slight edge, but it's far from certain.

The company could also choose to go with an outside candidate.

"I think we may know this year, but [Bob Iger] has two and a half more years. So it wouldn't surprise me if it is extended a little bit beyond this calendar year into next calendar year," close adviser and Candle Media co-founder Kevin Mayer told Yahoo Finance at the Cannes Lions Festival in mid-June.

The CEO search is set against a backdrop of more challenging operating conditions for Disney.

Disney (DISreported better-than-expected second quarter earnings in early August, but called out a late quarter slowdown in its theme park business. The company thinks the slowdown will persist for the next few quarters.

"We certainly see consumers behaving in a way — I wouldn't call it recessionary necessarily — they're watching their pennies a little bit more," Disney CFO Hugh Johnston told me on Yahoo Finance's Morning Brief.

Sales in its experiences segment — which houses the global theme park business — rose 2% year over year. Operating income fell 3%. Attendance was relatively unchanged year over year.

For the current quarter, Disney forecasts that operating profit for the segment will fall by a mid-single-digit percentage.

Shares of Disney are down about 14% in the last three months.

Despite the stock slide, Ng is staying upbeat with several longer-term positives for the company.

"There's going to be a short list of media companies that can have large-scale streaming video businesses. I think Disney probably sits there among a few other companies, namely Netflix (NFLX) and Amazon (AMZN) Prime," Ng said.

"One other thing that I think puts Disney in a very good position over the long term is its marquee sports rights portfolio, many of which are locked up through the end of the decade."

'CNN Journalist Suggests It's Unfair to Ask Kamala About "Policy Detail"'

by Paul Joseph Watson via modernity.news,

Ahead of tonight’s debate, a CNN journalist suggested it was unfair for people to ask too much “policy detail” of Kamala Harris and that it was the media’s “job” to point that out.

The comments were made by Natasha S. Alford during a discussion of what to expect during this evening’s head to head between Harris and Trump.

“How does she have an opportunity on the one hand to do what needs to get done and also straddle that?” Alford was asked.

“Well I think this is where the fourth estate comes in, this is our job, right, as journalists tomorrow?” she responded.

To actually push on the policy questions because what I do feel is that people are pushing for a higher standard of policy detail that they’ve actually pushed Donald Trump for,” she added.

In other words, don’t give Kamala too many hard questions about policy, despite that literally being the entire point of the debate.

Also, don’t grill her too much on things that matter, despite that being the entire point of journalism.

Harris has notoriously avoided talking about her what her actual policies will be and has only agreed to one major interview so far, during which she had to have her running mate Tim Walz sat next to her.

Kamala is known to be bad at unscripted performances and initially reported to demand ABC News let her use notes during the debate.

As we highlighted earlier, the media is already setting the narrative to declare Kamala the “winner” of the debate if she merely doesn’t rise to any personal insults Trump directs her way.

Harris has almost entirely avoided press conferences and answering any questions thrown at her by journalists, who appear perfectly happy to let her off the hook.
