Switch to filtered tap water from bottles can cut microplastics intake from 90,000 to 4,000 particles/year

It may be time to find America’s next top bottle.

Microplastics are everywhere — in the beauty products we wear, the cleaning supplies we use and even in the food we eatResearch suggests that these particles, smaller than a grain of rice, can harm reproductive, digestive and respiratory health, potentially leading to colon and lung cancer.

In a new scientific paper, three physicians report that switching from bottled water to filtered tap water could cut your microplastic intake by about 90% — from 90,000 to 4,000 particles each year.

“Given the widespread presence of microplastics in the environment, completely eliminating exposure is unrealistic. A more practical approach is to reduce the most significant sources of microplastic intake,” the researchers wrote this week in the Genomic Press.

This advice may be tough to swallow. Bottled water was America’s favorite packaged drink last year, according to industry data, with 16.2 billion gallons consumed, a 2% increase from 2023.

If you aren’t ready to ditch your plastic bottles or don’t have a filter for your tap, there are other ways to reduce microplastic intake.

“Beyond bottled water, significant dietary sources of microplastics are alcohol and seafood,” the researchers wrote. “Stopping the practice of heating food in plastic could be one of the most effective ways to reduce microplastic consumption.”

Microwaving food in plastic containers can release up to 4.22 million microplastic particles per square centimeter in just a few minutes. Opt for glass or stainless steel containers instead.

Other recommendations include not storing food in plastic and limiting consumption of canned and ultra-processed foods.

“Highly processed foods, like chicken nuggets, contained 30 times more microplastics per gram than chicken breasts, highlighting the impact of industrial processing, which often uses plastics at some point,” the researchers said.

The world’s companies are believed to generate nearly 460 million metric tons of plastic annually — this figure is projected to increase to 1.1 billion metric tons by 2050.

Americans inhale and ingest an estimated 39,000 to 52,000 microplastic particles a year, one study found.

Microplastics have been detected in human placentas, kidneys, lungs, livers, testicles and blood, among other organs and tissues.

Startling research published last month found that the human brain contains approximately a spoon’s worth of tiny shreds of plastic.

These particles can damage intestinal cells, trigger inflammation and disturb the balance of bacteria in the gut.

In the new paper, the researchers call for more studies on the long-term health effects of microplastics and “clear” limits on their exposure.

But while “reducing intake is a logical approach,” the researchers wrote, “it remains unclear whether this translates into a measurable reduction in microplastic accumulation within human tissues.”

US holding direct talks with Hamas about release of American hostages from Gaza

The White House confirmed Wednesday that American officials have engaged in direct talks with Hamas.

“The special envoy who’s engaged in this negotiation does have the authority to talk to anyone. Israel was consulted on this matter,” press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a briefing, seeming to refer to President Trump’s hostage envoy Adam Boehler.

“Dialogue and talking to people around the world to do what’s in the best interests of the American people is something that the president has proven is what he believes is a good faith effort to do what’s right for the American people.”

At least one American-citizen hostage — Edan Alexander, 21 — is believed to remain alive following the abductions that took place during Hamas terrorists’ Oct. 7, 2023, rampage that triggered Israel’s invasion, which halted with a cease-fire agreement in January.

Leavitt would not say if the talks also broached Trump’s proposal for a US takeover of the Gaza Strip.

“These are ongoing talks and discussions. I’m not going to detail them here. There are American lives at stake. I would defer you to the Department of State for further details, but I’m not going to get into those talks,” she said.

Trump Mideast envoy Steve Witkoff also participated in the recent talks, Al Arabiya reports, with some American officials reportedly taking part in meetings in Qatar.

Google tests an AI-only version of its search engine

Alphabet's Google launched an experimental version of its search engine on Wednesday that completely eliminates its classic 10 blue links in favor of an AI-generated summary.

The new feature, available to subscribers of Google One AI Premium, can be accessed via the results page for any search query by clicking on a tab labeled "AI Mode" to the side of existing options like Images and Maps.

"We've heard from power users that they want AI responses for even more of their searches," Robby Stein, a vice president of product, said in a blog post.

Google One AI Premium is a $19.99 per month plan that provides extra cloud storage and special access to some AI features.

Google currently displays AI Overviews, summaries that are increasingly appearing atop the traditional hyperlinks to relevant webpages, for users in more than 100 countries. It began adding advertisements to AI Overviews last May.

With AI Mode, users see a more comprehensive AI summary with hyperlinks to cited webpages. The 10 blue links have been replaced by a search bar for asking follow-up questions.

Google said AI Mode is being powered by a custom version of its Gemini 2.0 model with reasoning capabilities that make it better equipped to handle complex queries.

Alphabet's $350 billion in 2024 revenue was primarily driven by search-related advertising. But it is facing the biggest challenge to its core business in years from AI challengers led by Microsoft-backed OpenAI, which added search functions to ChatGPT last October.

Google has made integrating AI into search its biggest bet, investment chief Ruth Porat said at the Reuters NEXT conference in December.

In February, edtech company Chegg sued Google, accusing the previews of eroding demand for original content and undermining publishers' ability to compete.

Microsoft Says Chinese-Sponsored Hackers Targeting Cloud Applications

Microsoft warned that a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group is targeting common IT solutions to spy on companies and organizations around the world.

The company said in its threat intelligence blog Wednesday that it has identified a shift in tactics by Silk Typhoon, a Chinese state actor focused on espionage, toward using remote management tools and cloud applications to infiltrate a targeted organization.

Microsoft hasn't seen the group directly target its cloud services, but Silk Typhoon has exploited unpatched applications to elevate their access and conduct more illicit activities, the company said.

The group has used stolen credentials associated with privilege access management companies, cloud app providers and cloud data management companies to gain access to those companies' downstream customers and tenants, Microsoft said.

"Companies within these sectors are possible targets of interest to the threat actor," according to the blog.

Microsoft's blog provides recommendations for detecting and mitigating Silk Typhoon's activity, including ensuring that public facing devices are patched.

Dow rebounds by 500 points after Trump tariff auto delay

Stocks rose on Wednesday, staging a recovery rally after back-to-back losses as an exemption for automakers on President Donald Trump’s tariffs offered hope for more concessions.

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite added 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded by 503 points, or 1%, regaining some ground after plunging more than 1,300 points over the last two sessions.

The White House said it granted a one-month delay for tariffs on automakers whose cars comply with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Stellantis surged more than 7%, while Ford and General Motors each added about 4% and 5%, respectively. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump was open to providing additional exemptions on the taxes.

Still, uncertainty lingered as Trump said Canada’s fentanyl efforts were “not good enough” in a call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. It’s unclear if this automaker delay was the tariff-related announcement that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said to expect on Wednesday.

Trump’s tariffs — and subsequent announcements of retaliatory plans from China, Mexico and Canada — have rocked markets this week. Even with Wednesday’s respite, the three major indexes are all down about 1% on the week. The three indexes swung between positive and negative territory for the day, underscoring the market volatility as investors tracked the status of tariff policy.

US Rejects Arab League's $53BN Alternative Gaza Reconstruction Plan

The United States and Israel have quickly rejected a new Gaza peace and reconstruction plan proposed by the Arab League under Egypt's leadership, which was unveiled Tuesday.

A counterproposal to Trump's provocative Gaza 'takeover' plan which advocates the removal of the Palestinian population to neighboring Arab states, the Egyptian plan would of course allow its roughly two million inhabitants to remain.

The $53 billion plan approved by the Arab League aims to rebuild the destroyed Gaza Strip by 2030, while setting up hundreds of thousands of temporary housing units so that Palestinians won't have to leave. Arab leaders have blasted Trump's prior proposals as but greenlighting an Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign, and Jordan and Egypt in particular have vehemently rejected the possibility of resettling Palestinians in their territories.

It calls on UN Security Council to deploy an international peacekeeping force in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, which would establish security while reconstruction takes place - and foresees the recycling of rubble to expand Gaza's coastline and even "sustainable, green and walkable" housing and urban areas, also utilizing renewable energy.

Further, according to the Associated Press, "The communique said Egypt will host an international conference in cooperation with the United Nations for Gaza’s reconstruction, and a World Bank-overseen trust fund will be established to receive pledges to implement the early recovery and reconstruction plan."

Hamas has welcomed the plan, despite that it says the West Bank-based Palestinian Authority (PA) would eventually take over governance and management of the Gaza Strip.

"We welcome the Gaza reconstruction plan adopted in the summit’s final statement and call for ensuring all necessary resources for its success," the group said. The Islamist militant group further expressed support for "the formation of the Community Support Committee to oversee relief efforts, reconstruction and governance in Gaza."

An Israeli government statement said the Arab League's plan ultimately "fails to address the realities of the situation following October 7th, 2023, remaining rooted in outdated perspectives." It also blasted the Arab body for failing to condemn the Hamas Oct.7 terror attack in its statement announcing the plan.

Instead, the Israeli Foreign Ministry said, "Now, with President Trump’s idea, there is an opportunity for the Gazans to have free choice based on their free will. This should be encouraged! Instead, Arab states have rejected this opportunity, without giving it a fair chance, and continue to level baseless accusations against Israel."

The White House also responded negatively, with White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes asserting that the Arab plan did "not address the reality that Gaza is currently uninhabitable and residents cannot humanely live in a territory covered in debris and unexploded ordnance."

"President Trump stands by his vision to rebuild Gaza free from Hamas. We look forward to further talks to bring peace and prosperity to the region," he added.
