Interior Dept. Proposes Opening Up 82 Percent Of Alaskan Petroleum Reserve

by Naveen Athrappully via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),

The Department of Interior (DOI) released a draft analysis that proposes reopening up to 82 percent of the 23-million-acre National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPR-A) to oil and gas leasing and development, the agency said in a June 17 statement.

NPR-A was set aside as an emergency oil supply for the U.S. Navy by President Warren Harding in 1923. In 1976, the reserve was transferred to the DOI’s Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

In 2022, the Biden administration announced the closure of almost half of the NPR-A reserve to oil and gas drilling, overturning a policy from the first Trump administration that sought to boost oil development in the region.

The latest proposal reverses the Biden-era restrictions, “consistent with the Trump administration’s commitment to Energy Dominance and regulatory reform,” the DOI said.

The proposal supports a presidential action, “Unleashing Alaska’s Extraordinary Resource Potential,” signed by President Donald Trump on Jan. 20, 2025.

The action highlighted that Alaska has an “abundant and largely untapped supply of natural resources” that could deliver energy price relief for Americans, ease trade imbalances, and create high-quality jobs.

According to the DOI, Congress designated NPR-A for oil and gas exploration in response to the 1970s energy crisis. The BLM manages the reserve under the Naval Petroleum Reserves Production Act, which mandates an “expeditious program of competitive leasing,” the agency said.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Adam Suess said the proposed plan is about “creating more jobs for Americans, reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and tapping into the immense energy resources the National Petroleum Reserve was created to deliver.”

Under President Trump’s leadership, we’re cutting red tape and restoring commonsense policies that ensure responsible development and good stewardship of our public lands,” he said.

Reducing Regulations

According to the DOI, the proposal builds on efforts to reverse burdensome regulations that have been imposed on the oil and gas sectors and includes rescission of a 2024 rule that restricted leasing in NPR-A.

The DOI announced the planned rescission on June 2, calling the Biden-era policy an overreach that hampered domestic energy production.

Congress was clear: the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska was set aside to support America’s energy security through responsible development,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said.

“The 2024 rule ignored that mandate, prioritizing obstruction over production and undermining our ability to harness domestic resources at a time when American energy independence has never been more critical. We’re restoring the balance and putting our energy future back on track.”

The Biden-era rule had closed roughly 11 million acres of NPR-A to oil and gas extraction and restricted construction on another 2 million acres.

Critics Decry Plan

In a June 2 statement, the Alaska Wilderness League criticized the DOI’s move to “gut protections” in NPR-A, also known as the Western Arctic Reserve.

“The Trump administration’s move to roll back protections in the most ecologically important areas of the Western Arctic threatens wildlife, local communities, and our climate—all to appease extractive industries,” Kristen Miller, executive director of the group, said.

This is another outrageous attempt to sell off public lands to oil industry billionaires at the expense of one of the wildest places left in America. These lands are home to caribou, migratory birds, and vital subsistence resources that Indigenous communities have relied on for generations. The public fought hard for these protections, and we won’t stay silent while they’re dismantled.”

Meanwhile, the American Petroleum Institute welcomed the move to repeal the 2024 rule.

Dustin Meyer, senior vice president of policy, economics, and regulatory affairs at the group, called the 2024 regulation “misguided” in a June 2 statement.

Repealing the rule will “fully leverage Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve as a driver of revenue, economic growth, and energy security,” he said.

US Asked Ukraine Not To Attack Russian Energy, Zelensky Complains

 Via The Libertarian Institute

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that he was told by the US not to attack Russian energy infrastructure shortly after Vladimir Putin spoke with President Donald Trump.

"Today, the Russians launched a stone-cold, combined attack on our energy infrastructure. This is a spit in the face of everything the international community is trying to do to stop this war," the Ukrainian leader said Sunday. "It happened right after Putin’s conversation with Trump. After the Americans asked us not to strike Russian energy facilities."

Zelensky went on to attack Putin for offering to play a mediating role to end Israel’s war on Iran.

"At the same time as Putin tries to portray himself as a mediator for the Middle East and attempts to somehow assist his accomplices in Tehran. The level of cynicism is staggering," he added.

The Libertarian Institute reached out to the State Department to confirm Zelensky’s statement. The department’s press office replied:

"The United States and Ukraine agreed to develop measures for implementing President Trump’s and President Zelenskyy’s agreement to ban strikes against energy facilities of Russia and Ukraine," and referred to a March joint statement issued by the US and Ukraine.

Ukraine’s First Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said that Kiev had been told not to attack Russian energy infrastructure, but did not say the message came from Washington.

"Some allies have asked us not to strike Russian energy infrastructure – even as Russia wages all-out war on ours: targeting power plants, oil and gas infrastructure, hydroelectric dams – every form of energy we rely upon," she said.

Throughout the war, Ukraine has stepped up attacks inside of Russia, including hitting energy targets. The Kyiv Insider says Ukrainian forces did halt attacks on Russian energy in the 45 days leading up the the Presidential election last November, but resumed those attacks on election day in the US.

'US Attorney for NY John Sarcone chased by knife-wielding illegal Salvadoran'

A US attorney for New York was allegedly chased by a knife-wielding illegal immigrant with a lengthy criminal record who threatened to slit his throat on the streets of Albany Tuesday night, prosecutors said.

John Sarcone, the President Trump-appointed US attorney for the Northern District of New York, was allegedly chased and threatened outside the Hilton Hotel in Albany by Saul Morales-Garcia — an illegal migrant from El Salvador who was previously deported, WNYT reported, citing Albany County prosecutors.

Morales-Garcia, 40, allegedly aggressively advanced toward Sarcone with his weapon in hand — gesturing that he would slit the attorney’s throat as he lunged at him before chasing the US attorney down the street outside the hotel just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, that report stated, citing local police.

Sarcone was uninjured, and nearby Albany County sheriff’s deputies picked up Morales-Garcia just moments after the alleged attack, according to local cops.

The alleged attempted slasher was previously convicted of a felony in El Salvador and has been deported from the United States at least once in the past, WNYT reported, citing investigators.

Albany County prosecutors said the incident appeared to be a “random” street encounter.

Morales-Garcia is in the country illegally and has a criminal record in at least three other states outside New York, prosecutors said.

It is not known when Morales-Garcia entered the US or where he allegedly crossed into the country.

He is charged with attempted second-degree murder and is being held without bail, the Albany Times Union reported.

“It’s important that everybody understands that we take these things seriously — whether you’re the US attorney for the Northern District or your name’s John Smith and you live on Morton Avenue,” Albany County District Attorney Lee Kindlon said after the court hearings, the outlet reported.

Sarcone was appointed to the Northern District of New York in March by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The Pace University graduate is a native New Yorker, growing up in a “humble, blue-collar background” in Croton-on-Hudson, Sarcone said in a statement at the time.

US Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) blasted Gov. Kathy Hochul after the incident.

“In Kathy Hochul’s New York, nobody is safe, not even President Trump’s U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of NY John A. Sarcone III, who was ‘confronted and chased’ by an illegal alien armed with a knife in Albany last night, the Times Union reported,” she wrote on X.

“Three separate times, Hochul signed executive orders to protect violent illegal aliens from deportation. Kathy Hochul puts illegals first and New Yorkers last. We desperately need a governor who puts New Yorkers first and restores law and order to our streets.”

The Northern District of New York declined to provide a comment to The Post.

The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Air India releases new details about two engines on doomed London flight

Air India has revealed that one of the two engines on the doomed Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flight that crashed seconds after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport was new, and the other wasn’t due for a service until the end of the year.

“The right engine was a new engine put in March 2025,” the airline’s chairman N Chandrasekaran told the local Indian news channel, Times Now.

“The left engine was last serviced in 2023 and (was) due for its next maintenance check in December 2025”.

Investigations are underway into how the flight bound for London’s Gatwick Airport crashed into a medical students’ hostel last Thursday, killing at least 270 people.

“There are a lot of speculations and a lot of theories,” Chandrasekaran said, “But the fact that I know so far is this particular aircraft, this specific tail, AI171, has a clean history.

“I am told by all the experts that the black box and recorders will definitely tell the story. So, we just have to wait for that.”

The plane’s two black boxes have been recovered allowing for analysis of the cockpit voice recorder, which captures audio including voices, alarms and background noises from the cockpit, and the flight data recorder, which logs flight parameters like engine performance and the plane’s speed and altitude.

Chandrasekaran said that it may be a month before preliminary results of the investigation are available.

He also said the flight’s captain, Sumeet Sabharwal, was very experienced with over 11,500 hours of flying experience behind him, while his first officer Clive Kunder, had more than 3,400 hours.

“What I hear from colleagues is that they were excellent pilots and great professionals,” he said. “So we can’t jump to any conclusions.”

A team of experts from Boeing, engine supplier GE Aerospace and from the UK and US have joined the Indian-led investigation.

Funerals have begun for the casualties of India’s worst aviation disaster in three decades.

The sole survivor of the crash, 40-year-old British man Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, laid his younger brother Ajay, who was also on the flight, to rest on Wednesday.
