Kremlin Warns Against US Intervention In Iran, Tells Israeli Leaders 'Come To Your Senses'

Moscow has warned Washington against getting involved in military actions targeting Iran, saying that such interference could lead to uncontrollable escalation and dire consequences, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described during a Thursday press briefing at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

"We would like to especially warn Washington against military intervention in the situation, which would be an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences," she said.

"The priority today is to halt the escalation of violence, achieve a ceasefire, and restore peace. These steps are crucial for creating the necessary conditions to bring the situation back to the negotiating table. We are committed to facilitating this process in every possible way," she continued.

Since the opening days of the crisis which began with Israel's large warplane attack against Iran's nuclear and military sites in the early hours of Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in telephone discussions with both the Prime Minister of Israel and the President of Iran.

TASS also reports that Putin spoke with President Trump on the matter, urging de-escalation before another major war and quagmire engulfs the whole region once again. However, this seems to already be happening. Russia had previously to this current fighting offered to mediate the nuclear issue between Iran and Israel.

Zakharova continued to explain: "Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also been active, communicating with the foreign ministers of Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and Oman. The current crisis in the Middle East was a topic of discussion in Lavrov's conversations with the Azerbaijani foreign minister, as well as during negotiations with Indonesia’s foreign minister. These dialogues are ongoing."

That's when she laid out more of the Kremlin's position on the matter:

"We hope that all parties recognize that there is no viable alternative to seeking mutually acceptable negotiated solutions to the problems at hand. Our support for a resolution concerning the Iranian nuclear program will always be grounded in international law, the principle of equal and indivisible security, and a balanced consideration of mutual interests."

She backed Iran’s "clear commitment to its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty" - at a moment the White House has been demanding that Tehran agree to zero enrichment, which so far it has rejected, calling it a violation of its national sovereignty.

'We particularly warn Washington against military intervention that would be an extremely dangerous step with truly unpredictable negative consequences'

'Russia calls on the Israeli leadership to come to senses and immediately stop attacks on nuclear installations' — Zakharova

"Moscow fully endorses this position and firmly believes that a lasting resolution can only be realized through diplomacy and negotiations," Zakharova concluded. Still, Russia is not expected to play any direct military role in defending Iran, also as it has its own war raging in Ukraine. But the two sides are defense and arms trade partners.

Trump has been emphasizing that "Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon" but also that no one "knows what I'm going to do." He has also on Thursday pushed back on prior evening reports that he has made up his mind to get the US military involved. "The Wall Street Journal has No Idea what my thoughts are concerning Iran!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Three Rate Cuts in 24 Hours Show Europe’s Tariff Challenges

Three interest-rate cuts in just over 24 hours by central banks in Europe highlighted a shift as monetary officials seek to manage the fallout from Donald Trump’s unpredictable trade policies.

Central bankers in Switzerland and Sweden had suggested as recently as March that they were most likely done loosening, but the Swiss National Bank instead trimmed borrowing costs by 25 basis points on Thursday, following a similar move by Sweden’s Riksbank a day earlier.

J&J MedTech introduces new plates for VOLT fracture management platform

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) MedTech has launched two new plating systems for distal radius (wrist) and proximal humerus fractures for its Variable Angle Optimised Locking Technology (VOLT) plating system in the US.

Launched in October 2024, VOLT is a fracture management platform designed to improve the stability of fitted plates and streamline workflow efficiencies in orthopaedic surgery.

The system initially included mini and small fragment plating systems. These were cleared by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March 2024 for the fracture plating of bones found in areas such as the ankle, forearm, and clavicle.

J&J stated that the wrist and proximal humerus fracture plating systems were the first additions to the VOLT platform since they represent some of the most fractured bones among the US population. Additions to the platform are planned for the future.

Research indicates that distal radius fractures in the US account for around 25% of fractures in the paediatric population and up to 18% of all fractures in the elderly age group. Meanwhile, proximal humerus fractures account for 5%-6% of all adult fractures in the US.

J&J MedTech’s VOLT wrist treatment system was designed in conjunction with the Hand Expert Group within the AO Technical Commission, a Swiss nonprofit that specialises in the surgical treatment of trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.

The system is designed to treat a range of wrist fractures and includes the VOLT two-column distal radius rim plate. This plate is shaped to sit more distally, allowing improved access to distal fragments, and features a lower profile in the flexor pollicis region. According to J&J, these design choices are intended to support surgeon requirements when operating on both simple and complex fracture patterns.

The VOLT Proximal Humerus 3.5 Plating System is designed for flexible locking at a range of angles and includes a variety of plate length options, with the plate also featuring wide suture holes designed for easier suture passage.

Commenting on the new VOLT additions, Aldo Denti, company group chairman of orthopaedics at J&J MedTech, said: “These innovations are designed to provide surgeons with the tools necessary to navigate the complexities of upper extremity fractures with confidence.”

According to GlobalData analysis, the global orthopaedic devices market is growing at a CAGR of 3.1% and is forecast to reach a valuation of around $75.8bn in 2034, up from $56bn in 2024.

Drone makers battle for air dominance with 'wingman' aircraft

Defence heavyweights and emerging military tech firms used the Paris Airshow to showcase cutting-edge drones known as "wingmen" - uncrewed aircraft designed to fly alongside next-generation fighter jets and reshape the future of air combat.

The Paris show, the biggest aerospace and defence gathering in the world, featured a record number of drones, reflecting their rising importance after proving highly effective in the Ukraine war and as the U.S. prepares for a potential conflict with China in the Pacific.

In April last year, the U.S. Air Force selected Anduril and General Atomics to develop the first fleet of drone wingmen, which are designed to fly alongside manned fighter jets and are officially known as Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA).

California-based Anduril, which has already supplied small drones to Ukraine and was making its debut at the air show, displayed a model of its 17-foot Fury drone - planned for production in 2027 as part of the U.S. Air Force’s CCA programme.

"We’re moving extremely fast," Jason Levin, Anduril’s senior vice president of engineering, told Reuters.

"The aircraft is very capable. We can’t go into specifics here, but it performs the mission like a fighter."

Levin said Anduril had raised $2.5 billion to build a 5-million-square-foot production facility in Ohio, with construction set to begin next year.

In March, Anduril signed a 30-million-pound ($38 million) deal with Britain to supply its compact Altius drone to Ukraine. The drone can be launched from the ground or air and is capable of conducting strikes, serving as a decoy or for cyber warfare.

Larger drones like Fury are part of the U.S. CCA programme, which aims to field around 1,000 autonomous drones capable of conducting surveillance, electronic warfare and strike operations alongside piloted fighter jets - such as Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT)’s F-35 and the next-generation F-47, which Boeing (NYSE:BA) was tapped to build following its selection by the Air Force in March.

General Atomics showed off a model of its YFQ-42A drone at the show, which is its equivalent of the Fury, with both designed for potential use in the Pacific if China invaded democratically-ruled Taiwan.

Last week, Boeing demonstrated the potential of drones operating in coordination with human pilots during a groundbreaking test with the Royal Australian Air Force, the U.S. aerospace giant announced at the air show.

In the trial, two of Boeing’s Ghost Bat drones flew alongside an E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft, with a human operator remotely controlling the uncrewed systems to carry out a mission against an airborne target, the company said.

"The Ghost Bat has the potential to turn a single fighter jet into a fighting team, with advanced sensors that are like hundreds of eyes in the sky," Australian Minister for Defence Industry Pat Conroy said in a statement.

European defence firms are also advancing wingman drone initiatives, including Sweden’s Saab and a trilateral partnership between Dassault Aviation, Airbus, and Indra Sistemas (BME:IDR) under the Future Combat Air System. The programme aims to integrate autonomous drones with manned fighter jets.

Turkey’s Baykar displayed two of its drone models at the show for the first time - the high-altitude, heavy lift Akinci and the TB3, which has foldable wings and can take off or land on short-runway aircraft carriers. On Monday, Baykar and Italian defence and aerospace group Leonardo formally launched a joint venture for unmanned systems.

Germany’s Rheinmetall (ETR:RHMG) announced at the show that it would partner with Anduril to build versions of Fury and Barracuda - a cruise missile-style drone - for European markets.

Apple Explores AI to Speed Custom Chips

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is exploring generative AI to accelerate its in-house chip design, potentially slashing development timelines and boosting productivity.

In remarks last month in Belgium, Johny Srouji, Apple's senior vice president of hardware technologies, told attendees at an Imec awards ceremony that generative AI has a high potential in getting more design work in less time.

Since debuting its first A4 chip in 2010, Apple has relied on cutting-edge EDA tools from Cadence Design Systems (NASDAQ:CDNS) and Synopsys (NASDAQ:SNPS). Srouji noted those partners are already integrating AI into their software suites to handle growing design complexity.

Apple's chip roadmap has included monumental betsmost notably the 2020 shift from Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) to Apple Silicon across Mac desktops and laptops. Srouji said that all-in strategy, with no backup plan, underpinned the company's ability to optimize performance and power efficiency across devices like the M1 and M2 processors and the Vision Pro headset.

He argued that AI-enhanced tools could represent a similarly transformative leap by automating repetitive tasks and enabling more iterative experimentation.

Investors should watch how quickly EDA providers roll out AI modules and whether Apple pilots internal machine-learning models for layout, verification or synthesis. Faster cycle times could give Apple an edge over rivals, driving cost savings and potentially smoothing supply-chain bottlenecks.

AI-powered design could shorten chip development from years to months, helping Apple stay ahead in silicon innovation and maintain tight hardware-software integration.

    • Elon Musk's X is stepping up its push to turn the social media platform into an "everything app," the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

The platform, formerly known as Twitter, will "soon" allow users to make investments or trades on the platform, CEO Linda Yaccarino told the newspaper in an interview at the Cannes Lions advertising festival.

partnered with Visa to develop "X Money" earlier this year as a digital wallet and P2P-payment service. This forms part of Musk's ambition to turn X into a super app, akin to the Chinese WeChat, which offers numerous retail and financial services as well as messaging.

As such, crypto observers will think it likely that any plans Musk has for X to provide financial services will involve cryptocurrency in some form.

X did not immediately respond to CoinDesk's request for comment.

    • "Soon you're going to be able to live your whole financial life on the platform," Yaccarino said in a panel appearance at the same event, listing peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, storing value, paying creators or watching pay-per-view (PPV) events as examples.

    • Elon Musk has become closely associated with cryptocurrency over a number of years, due to his fondness for memecoin DOGE and the 11,500 BTC ($1.2 billion) that his electric-car manufacturer Tesla holds.
