NYC could become tourism hotspot for sex if Mamdani becomes mayor, critics warn

Welcome to Vice City, 2026.

NYC Democratic mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani has been a passionate supporter of decriminalizing prostitution — leaving many critics fearful the Big Apple will devolve into a hedonistic den of iniquity if he wins November’s general election.

As far back as when he was running for state Assembly in 2020, Mamdani has cheered that hookers should be able to turn tricks with impunity.

“Not only must we decriminalize sex work, we need a comprehensive platform of justice for all,” Mamdani said on the campaign trail in May 2020.

And as a Queens assemblyman, he’s co-sponsored multiple versions of legislation to decriminalize sex work statewide that remain stalled, supports them annually, and has spoken out in favor of the proposed law change many times.

“I would like to register my support for [decriminalizing sex work] legislation, my eagerness for that debate and for my fundamental belief that sex work is work,” he said at a February 2021 Assembly meeting.

Yet Mamdani has barely said a word on the topic during his mayoral run, leaving many critics fearful he’s ready to roll out a Trojan Horse-style plan should he win the election.

“The public needs to be fully aware that Mr. Mamdani wants a New York City where selling sex, buying sex, and promoting the sale of sex is completely normal and legal,” warned Sonia Ossorio, executive director of National Organization for Women NYC, which works to advance women’s rights, policy and leadership.

“But unlike many of his most concerning and controversial positions, he’s not out there talking about this because he knows it shocks the conscience.”

“The consequences” of decriminalizing prostitution would mean the Big Apple “becoming a sex tourism destination,” potentially rivaling the red-light district in Amsterdam and parts of Belgium and Nevada where selling sex is legal, she added.

Proponents of decriminalizing sex work claim allowing legal sex work leaves hookers — especially those who are trans, illegal migrants or people of color — less vulnerable to violence and exploitation by pimps, johns and even police officers.

But many studies of countries and cities where prostitution is legal — including in Europe and parts of Nevada — show it typically leads to increases in crime, including human trafficking, organized crime and violence against prostitutes. Similar studies that were inconclusive found no significant drops in crime.

Queens residents have complained about Roosevelt Avenue’s “Market of Sweethearts” and the quality-of-life issues stemming from it.For the New York Post

Ossorio said decriminalizing prostitution in other parts of the world has historically led to sex work and sex trade expanding there, something she fears could happen in the Big Apple if Mamdani becomes mayor.

“What happens when you have more paying customers?” she said. “You have to go to the poorest neighborhoods and recruit young girls, and you have to import younger people from other countries. That is not in line with Mr. Mamdani’s slogan [of providing] ‘dignity for everyone.’”

If elected mayor, Mamdani would still need to go through the state Legislature to decriminalize sex work, but he’d be in a prime position to better advocate for such changes as well as ensuring that cracking down on prostitution is a low priority for the NYPD.

Mamdani noted his stance on decriminalizing sex work in his 2020 state Assembly campaign.

Clusters of New York City have been inundated with an influx of hookers and pimps brazenly peddling flesh on public streets since legislation repealing a state statute prohibiting loitering for the purpose of prostitution was signed into law in February 2021 by then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, critics said.

They include Queens’ infamous migrant “Market of Sweethearts” along the Roosevelt Avenue corridor in Jackson Heights, Corona and other surrounding neighborhoods; seedy Penn Track in East New York, Brooklyn; and a sleazy section of the South Bronx called “The Hub.”

Both Rosa Sanchez, president of the Restore Roosevelt Avenue Coalition, and former Queens Councilman Hiram Monserrate – who used the represent the neighborhoods encompassing the “Market of the Sweethearts” – said the area will only get worse under Mamdani.

“I strongly believe crime will rise even more here,” said Sanchez. “Our community is already suffering with all the crime and prostitution and all the gangs affiliated with prostitution. We’ve seen Roosevelt Avenue deteriorate with young ladies on corners. What example are we setting for our children?”

The NYPD did put a dent in the lawlessness earlier this year during its 90-day Operation Restore Roosevelt operation, with Mayor Eric Adams in June announcing crime had dropped 28% along the seedy strip compared to the previous year.

However, the department scaled back its presence after the surge, Monseratte said.

Mamdani has repeatedly co-sponsored state legislation to decriminalize sex work.NY Assembly

Republican mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa painted an even gloomier picture.

“If Zohran Mamdani becomes mayor, what we see now in Corona, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and downtown Flushing could spread to all 350 neighborhoods in New York City, and he would do nothing to stop our streets from becoming red-light districts,” barked the founder of the Guardian Angels crime watchdog group.

Adams said he believes decriminalizing sex work would only make it easier for prostitutes to be exploited while emboldening “those who profit off the pain of others.”

“Our administration will never turn a blind eye to the abuse, violence, and human suffering that comes with this trade,” said Adams, a retired NYPD captain, in a statement to The Post.

“We are cracking down on traffickers and illegal operations, while offering real resources and a path forward for those trapped in this life. That’s the balance — compassion for victims, zero tolerance for exploitation. New Yorkers deserve safety and dignity, not policies that handcuff law enforcement and open the door to more abuse.”

Mamdani wasn’t shy about his stance on sex work in this May 2020 social media post.

Cuomo put out a press release Friday — after being contacted by The Post — touting that he “spent years” as governor opposing legislative attempts by Mamdani and other far-left pols to decriminalize sex work.

'World leaders react to Trump-Putin summit reaching no deal on Ukraine'

Following are reactions from world leaders on Saturday to the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which did not resolve Moscow’s war in Ukraine.

UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT VOLODYMYR ZELENSKIY ON X:

"We support President Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the USA, and Russia. Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this.

"On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.

"It is important that Europeans are involved at every stage to ensure reliable security guarantees together with America. We also discussed positive signals from the American side regarding participation in guaranteeing Ukraine’s security."

JOINT STATEMENT BY EUROPEAN LEADERS:

"We are clear that Ukraine must have ironclad security guarantees to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We welcome President Trump’s statement that the U.S. is prepared to give security guarantees. The Coalition of the Willing is ready to play an active role. No limitations should be placed on Ukraine’s armed forces or on its cooperation with third countries. Russia cannot have a veto against Ukraine‘s pathway to EU and NATO.

"It will be up to Ukraine to make decisions on its territory. International borders must not be changed by force...

"We are determined to do more to keep Ukraine strong in order to achieve an end to the fighting and a just and lasting peace...We will continue to strengthen sanctions and wider economic measures to put pressure on Russia’s war economy.

Ukraine can count on our unwavering solidarity as we work towards a peace that safeguards Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests."

UK PRIME MINISTER KEIR STARMER

"President Trump’s efforts have brought us closer than ever before to ending Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. His leadership in pursuit of an end to the killing should be commended.

"I welcome the openness of the United States, alongside Europe, to provide robust security guarantees to Ukraine as part of any deal. This is important progress and will be crucial in deterring Putin from coming back for more.

"In the meantime, until he stops his barbaric assault, we will keep tightening the screws on his war machine with even more sanctions...

"Our unwavering support for Ukraine will continue as long as it takes."

FRENCH PRESIDENT EMMANUEL MACRON ON X:

"It will also be essential to learn all the lessons of the past 30 years, and in particular Russia’s well-established propensity to fail to keep its own commitments.

"We will continue to work closely with President Trump and President Zelenskiy to ensure that our interests are preserved in a spirit of unity and responsibility.

"France continues to stand resolutely by Ukraine’s side."

ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER GIORGIA MELONI:

"A glimmer of hope has finally opened to discuss peace in Ukraine..Italy is doing its part, along with its Western allies."

GERMAN CHANCELLOR FRIEDRICH MERZ ON X:

"Ukraine can count on our unwavering solidarity as we work towards a peace that safeguards Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests."

EUROPEAN COMMISSION PRESIDENT URSULA VON DER LEYEN ON X:

"The EU is working closely with President Zelenskiy and the United States to reach a just and lasting peace. Strong security guarantees that protect Ukrainian and European vital security interests are essential."

EU CHIEF DIPLOMAT KAJA KALLAS:

"The U.S. holds the power to force Russia to negotiate seriously. The EU will work with Ukraine and the U.S. so that Russia’s aggression does not succeed and that any peace is sustainable. Moscow won’t end the war until it realises it can’t continue. So Europe will continue to back Ukraine, including by working on a 19th Russia sanctions package.

INDIA FOREIGN MINISTRY SPOKESPERSON RANDHIR JAISWAL

"India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable.

"India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine.

NORWEGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER ESPEN BARTH EIDE, speaking to reporters in Oslo:

"Our view is clear: it is important we must continue to put pressure on Russia, and even increase it, to give the clear signal to Russia that it must pay the price.

"We must listen to Ukraine’s wishes and needs. We know that President Putin wants to split Europe and the United States. With all our allies, we must do everything we can to avoid that."

CZECH PRIME MINISTER PETR FIALA:

"The results of the Alaska summit confirm that while the U.S. and its allies are seeking paths to peace, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin is still only interested in the greatest possible territorial gains and the restoration of the Soviet empire."

HUNGARIAN PRIME MINISTER VIKTOR ORBAN ON FACEBOOK:

"For years we have watched the two biggest nuclear powers dismantle the framework of their cooperation and shoot unfriendly messages back and forth. That has now come to an end. Today the world is a safer place than it was yesterday."

POLISH PRIME MINISTER DONALD TUSK ON X:

"The West must remain united as it enters a decisive moment for Ukraine’s future and European security."

"The game for Ukraine’s future, the security of Poland and all of Europe has entered a decisive phase."

"Today, it is even clearer that Russia respects only the strong, and Putin has once again proven to be a cunning and ruthless player. Therefore, maintaining the unity of the entire West is so important."

POLISH PRESIDENT’S FOREIGN POLICY AIDE MARCIN PRZYDACZ, speaking to reporters:

"The fact that these talks have begun, that there is a discussion, is something we in Poland consider to be of some value.

"The war can really only end in two ways: either by capitulation of one side, in this situation, the most important thing for us would be the defeat of the Russian Federation. But the other solution is also negotiations, and such negotiations were underway yesterday and will likely continue in the near future."

SLOVAK PRIME MINISTER ROBERT FICO, in recorded statement on Facebook:

"The presidents launched a vital process in Alaska.

"The coming days will show whether the big players in the Union will support this process... or whether the unsuccessful European strategy of trying to weaken Russia through this conflict with all kinds of literally incredible financial, political or military assistance to Kyiv will continue."

SWEDISH PRIME MINISTER ULF KRISTERSSON:

"I know that many Swedes are concerned about what last night’s talks between Putin and Trump could mean," he said in a written comment.

"A bad peace, on Russia’s terms, would mean that Russia could threaten more European countries. Therefore, it is extremely important that a united Europe continues to give Ukraine all the support it needs to avoid losing the war."

"The government will now continue to engage in close dialogue with Ukraine, with other European countries and with the United States. The pressure on Russia must continue to achieve a ceasefire and end the war with strong security guarantees for the future."

ROMANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER TOIU OANA ON X:

"We remain convinced that, through transatlantic unity and European solidarity, we can rebuild a future in which lasting peace and security form the foundation of prosperity in the region.

Romania will continue to be an active part of this common effort. For peace and economic growth, stability and security in the Black Sea region are essential.

The European Union has a strong role to play, and the involvement of European leaders has already shaped the format of negotiations. However, the various formats of discussion need to be strengthened, as do the frameworks of dialogue on the eastern flank."

''UK In 2025': Police Face Backlash on Fail To Arrest Asylum-Seeker Invading Elderly Woman's Home'

 Via Remix News,

London’s Metropolitan Police has been accused of failing to protect the public after an asylum seeker housed at the Britannia Hotel in Canary Wharf entered an elderly woman’s home without permission — and was returned to the hotel without arrest.

The incident took place on Aug. 13, when police were called to Marsh Wall at 6:07 p.m. Officers claimed in a statement posted on social media that the man entered the property through an open door while “being followed by a group of men” in the street.

Police claim no intent could be proven, and the man was not arrested.

However, the response was markedly different toward protesters angry about the housing of asylum seekers in the area. Three demonstrators outside the migrant hotel, questioning why the man was not arrested, were themselves detained — including a 22-year-old woman facing multiple charges such as common assault on a security guard, possession of an offensive weapon, and affray. A Section 35 dispersal order was issued in the area, leading to the arrest of a 28-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman for breaching it.

The police statement has triggered a wave of condemnation from commentators and public figures. Firas Modad, a presenter at Lotus Eaters, posted on X: “Wait. An illegal migrant enters a home. Three people get arrested. But not the trespasser?! And the person who objected to his presence gets the book thrown at her?” He called out Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, asking her if she would be demanding any resignations from the police force over the matter.

British barrister and political commentator Steven Barrett said, “Thanks, Evil Bot 3000, for trying. But do you mind telling your masters at the Metropolitan Police that this is both gibberish as law — and really, deeply, disturbing. Be normal people again.”

Rory Geoghegan, the founder of the Public Safety Foundation and a former police officer, wrote: “A world-class police service would recognize that it needs to do more than pump out statements like this. Why are senior officers and comms teams in the UK so afraid of holding proper briefings for the media and public?

People are openly talking about the prospect of civil war and that the country has ‘had enough’ — but those in HQ think the answer is a few lines of text?”

Conservative political commentator Sophie Corcoran said, “So you’re telling me this demonic-looking man, whom we know nothing about, can walk into a woman’s flat and not get arrested. Women are doomed.”

“Met Police confirm that this thing entering your home is NOT a crime. But being angry about it is. This is the UK 2025,” added nationalist activist Tommy Robinson.

The Met Police say they are reviewing body-worn video footage and other evidence, describing the incident as “a complex set of events.”

Applied Materials' Forecast Rattles Investors

Applied Materials Inc. suffered the worst single-day stock decline in five years after giving a disappointing sales and profit forecast, renewing concerns that the US trade dispute with China is weighing on demand.

Revenue will be approximately $6.7 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter, the company said in a statement Thursday. Analysts had estimated $7.32 billion on average. Profit will be about $2.11 a share, excluding some items, compared with a projection of $2.38.

Applied Materials, the largest American producer of chipmaking gear, is seeing less demand from customers in China, Chief Executive Officer Gary Dickerson said in an interview. It also faces delays in approval for exporting technology to that country, he said. Moreover, large customers are putting off some purchases in the face of prolonged negotiations around tariffs and other economic issues.

“It just creates a level of uncertainty,” Dickerson said.

The outlook sent shares of Applied Materials down 14% on Friday, the most since the early days of the pandemic in March 2020. They had been up 16% this year heading into the report.

In the third quarter, which ended July 27, revenue rose 7.7% to $7.3 billion. Analysts had anticipated $7.21 billion on average, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Profit was $2.48 a share, compared with an estimate of $2.36.

Applied Materials’ customer ranks include some of the biggest names in the chip industry, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Samsung Electronics Co. and Intel Corp. Those manufacturers order gear well ahead of starting production, making Applied Materials’ forecasts a barometer for future demand.

The company said last week that it would participate in an Apple Inc. plan to boost manufacturing in the US by spending more than $200 million on a facility in Arizona. Applied Materials will also sell equipment to Texas Instruments Inc.’s US factories to support Apple products.

“Applied Materials’ decision to be a core member of Apple’s ‘American Manufacturing Program,’ a drive to increase factory production within the US, could strengthen its position as a key supplier of chipmaking tools for advanced semiconductors used in iPhones,” Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Masahiro Wakasugi said in a note

“The new administration is very focused on increasing semiconductor supply in the United States,” Dickerson said on Thursday. “We’re very positive.”

In July, rival Lam Research Corp. said revenue for the quarter ending in December would ease from the current-quarter levels, with Chinese customers potentially scaling back after a spending spree

In a further sign of US-China tensions, Applied Materials was recently sued by Beijing E-Town Semiconductor Technology Co. over what that company characterized as trade secret theft.

Still, Dickerson said the long-term demand outlook for computing power remains strong. Customers in China had significantly ramped up buying in recent years, and are now just digesting those purchases, he said.

Trump says no imminent plans to penalize China for buying Russian oil

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil but might have to "in two or three weeks."

Trump has threatened sanctions on Moscow and secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil if no moves are made to end the war in Ukraine. China and India are the top two buyers of Russian oil.

The president last week imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, citing its continued imports of Russian oil.

However, Trump has not taken similar action against China.

He was asked by Fox News' Sean Hannity if he was now considering such action against Beijing after he and Russian President Vladimir Putin failed to produce an agreement to resolve or pause Moscow's war in Ukraine.

"Well, because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that," Trump said after his summit with Putin in Alaska.

"Now, I may have to think about it in two weeks or three weeks or something, but we don't have to think about that right now. I think, you know, the meeting went very well."

Chinese President Xi Jinping's slowing economy will suffer if Trump follows through on a promise to ramp up Russia-related sanctions and tariffs.

Xi and Trump are working on a trade deal that could lower tensions - and import taxes - between the world's two biggest economies. But China could be the biggest remaining target, outside of Russia, if Trump ramps up punitive measures.
