NYC won’t tear down street encampments, Mamdani says as homeless camp out in historic blizzard

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said Monday that street encampments won’t be torn down during one of the worst blizzards in New York City’s history — even as homeless people kept camping out and rejecting offers for shelter.

The bomb cyclone offered a new wintry test for Mamdani’s administration after its response to another storm in January descended into a prolonged, deadly crisis that consumed much of his first 60 days in office.

“The blizzard is a time when our focus should be not on physical infrastructure, but on people and on getting them indoors,” Mamdani argued during a news conference over Winter Storm Hernando.

Nineteen New Yorkers died amid the first blast of winter weather, as critics assailed Mamdani’s arguably feckless response to getting homeless people into shelter.

Hizzoner less than a week ago had reversed his past opposition to clearing out homeless encampments, albeit by giving vagrants a new seven-day notice before they’re rousted.

This storm, outreach workers placed 79 homeless New Yorkers into shelters as up to 2 feet of snow fell on the city — and none of those were involuntary removals, Mamdani said.

But some homeless New Yorkers still flat-out refused help as they slept in the blizzard conditions, The Post witnessed firsthand on the Manhattan Bridge’s footpath.

Several tents were completely covered by snow on the bridge’s Manhattan side as FDNY responders and NYPD officers, along with a private ambulance crew, arrived to make sure the indigent occupants were safe.

“I’m alright,” one man said, shaking his head as responders peeled back the tarps.

An FDNY EMT said the man had rejected appeals made in both English and Spanish.

“We can’t remove them. People have the right to be homeless in New York City,” the EMT said.

Two NYPD officers stood nearby as the worker tried to coax the tent dwellers into better shelter, but didn’t remove the man.

Out of 130 homeless people contacted by police, 127 refused to go into shelters. Only two accepted city services, police officials said.

While city outreach teams did not pull anyone off the streets against their will, NYPD officers involuntarily removed one person whom they deemed a risk to themselves, a police department spokesperson said.

Cops can conduct involuntary removals that take homeless people off the streets if they’re deemed a danger to themselves or others — however, EMTs have no power to pull the person inside.

Those removals are different from the practice of tearing down encampments, which is called a “homeless sweep.”

Both came under scrutiny during the last winter storm. Mamdani was slammed for the 19 outdoor deaths, most from hypothermia, as he contended involuntary removals should only be done as a last resort.

Outreach teams with a licensed clinician conducted 33 involuntary removals between Jan. 19 and Feb. 10, roughly the span of the last storm and subsequent cold snap, according to city officials.

NYPD officers conducted 52 removals during that same time period, a spokesperson for the department said.

No deaths have been tied to the latest wintry blast, Mamdani said.

“We are not aware of any deaths related to this blizzard on our city streets or in public areas,” he said.

Trump got Mexico to hand over 100 cartel leaders including El Mencho’s brother before Jalisco raid

Mexico has quietly shipped nearly 100 suspected cartel drug traffickers to the US to stand trial charges after President Trump branded the groups foreign terrorist organizations last year — and pressured the Mexican government to cooperate.

The suspects include the brother of Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera Cervantes — the brutal Jalisco New Generation cartel (CJNG) leader who was killed by the Mexican army on Sunday.

The Justice Department said many of the 92 defendants released to the Americans had US extradition requests that were not honored during the Biden administration.

“As President Trump has made clear, cartels are terrorist groups, and this Department of Justice is devoted to destroying cartels and transnational gangs,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said of the first round of transfers which kicked off last February.

“We will prosecute these criminals to the fullest extent of the law in honor of the brave law enforcement agents who have dedicated their careers — and in some cases, given their lives — to protect innocent people from the scourge of violent cartels.”

The Mexican government elected to round up the dozens of wanted criminals after the Trump administration made clear it was taking these matters more seriously, the DOJ said.

“This is another landmark achievement in the Trump Administration’s mission to destroy the cartels,” Bondi said of the latest round of handovers announced last month.

The alleged cartel members, “including terrorists from the Sinaloa Cartel, CJNG, and others – will now pay for their crimes against the American people on American soil,” she added.

Among the first tranche of narco-criminals flown into the US by Mexican military aircraft last February was Antonio Oseguera Cervantes, nicknamed Tony Montana after “Scarface.”

He allegedly helped lead CJNG alongside “El Mencho,” and he’s charged with cocaine and meth trafficking.

In January, the US took custody of Sinaloa cartel bigwig Pedro Inzunza Noriega, who along with his son, Pedro Inzunza Coronel, led one of the largest and most sophisticated fentanyl production networks in the world.

Together they were responsible for trafficking tens of thousands of kilograms of the deadly narcotic into the US.

In total the Mexican military has transported 92 dangerous fugitives to the US in three batches starting last February. They are wanted for crimes ranging from human- and drug-trafficking to money laundering, racketeering and murder.

The cases will be prosecuted in 13 states and the District of Columbia.

Those convicted will serve out their sentences in the US before being deported to their country of origin, according to the Justice Department — though many of them are facing life sentences for their crimes.

August’s roundup included Kevin Gil Acosta and Martin Zazueta Perez, leaders of the security apparatus for the Chapitos, a powerful faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that engages in prolific fentanyl trafficking.

Both men have led sicarios armed with military-style weapons like M-16s, AK-47s, AR-15s and grenade launchers in attacks against the Mexican government and military.

The US Marshals Service, which usually handles retrieval of cross-border crime suspects, praised Trump and Bondi for their efforts in getting Mexico to turn over the fugitives.

“Leadership like President Trump’s and Attorney General Bondi’s to work diligently to bring all of these wanted criminals back to the United States reinforces their commitment to getting justice for their victims,” said USMS Director Gadyaces S. Serralta.

“This sends a very clear message; justice does not stop at borders.”

How anti-Israel Democrats are radicalizing the party

Throughout history, political movements and societies that appease antisemitism eventually decay.

Antisemitism corrodes moral judgment, distorts truth, and undermines the very democratic values its enablers claim to champion.

Societies that normalize hatred of Jews never stop there. They fail because they abandon clarity for ideology and principle for power.

Today, the Democratic Party risks following this same pattern.

The party of Roosevelt faces a consequential choice that will shape its moral credibility and political future.

The question is simple: Will Democrats confront antisemitism and anti-Zionist extremism within their ranks, or continue to excuse, elevate, and normalize it?

Will Democrats choose the path of ethical emptiness leading to political irrelevance?

The path that treats Israel as uniquely evil, indulges obsessive anti-Zionists, and punishes leaders who refuse to comply?

In 2024, Kamala Harris’ decision to elevate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz over Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro exemplified that leadership failure.

Shapiro is among the most popular Democratic governors in the country. He is a pragmatic executive with broad appeal and proven ability to win as a Democrat in a swing state.

According to his recent book, when Harris’ team vetted him as a potential running mate, he refused to yield to their demands that he retract his condemnations of Hamas-supporting protesters following the Oct. 7 massacre.

They also apparently asked him whether he had ever been an agent for the State of Israel, a blatantly absurd question for an American public servant of his stature.

Instead of selecting Shapiro, Harris chose Walz, and lost overwhelmingly.

Since the 2024 election, Walz has struggled to maintain credibility within his own state, and will not seek reelection.

In sum: Harris elevated a weaker, less-qualified leader to avoid offending the party’s anti-Israel activist wing.

Harris’ VP choice serves as a cautionary tale: When parties sideline their strongest leaders to appease ideological extremists, they lose.

Unfortunately, the Democratic Party refuses to learn from past mistakes.

California Sen. Scott Wiener, a prominent San Francisco progressive and co-chair of the California Legislative Jewish Caucus vying to succeed Nancy Pelosi, recently capitulated to far-left pressure by publicly labeling Israel’s self-defense actions in Gaza a “genocide.”

That was not conviction; it was political survival.

That a Democratic candidate feels compelled to adopt extremist language to survive a primary should alarm anyone concerned about the party’s future.

In Los Angeles, mayoral candidate Nithya Raman operates within the ideological ecosystem shaped by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

The DSA platform explicitly rejects Zionism, embraces the antisemitic “boycott, divestment, and sanctions” (BDS) movement (which only targets one side in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict), and frames Israel as a colonial enterprise.

Increasingly, the DSA backs candidates in major cities who align with these positions.

In New York, Zohran Mamdani, also part of the DSA, has embraced an agenda that systematically strips the local Jewish community of safeguards against attack. Under the guise of “anti-Zionism,” his movement seeks to remove Jews from the ranks of “protected” minority lists, unless they renounce their connection to Israel.

These views are increasingly normalized under the banner of justice and human rights. But attacking Israel and Jews does not advance genuine human rights. It promotes rigid ideological agendas, using moral language that discourages scrutiny or debate.

The alternative path is one of credibility and seriousness, focused on issues that matter to most Americans. It is the path of leaders who refuse to surrender truth to extremists, who understand that defending liberal values means rejecting antisemitism in all forms, including when rebranded as “anti-Zionism.”

America’s strength has always rested on its founding liberal values and democratic alliances. A Democratic Party that cannot recognize this risks losing elections and its claim to moral leadership.

The choice before Democrats is clear: Will they follow leaders who distort Israel and normalize antisemitism? Or will they elevate those who defend truth, reject extremism, and focus on real challenges facing Americans?

History suggests that parties, and nations, that choose wrongly fail to survive.

State AGs demand AMA stop hormone treatments for minors

by Greg Richter

coalition of 20 state attorneys general has written to the American Medical Association, requesting that it stop recommending hormonal therapy for gender dysphoria in minors, The Daily Wire reports.

The move, led by Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall, comes after the AMA dropped its support for gender reassignment surgeries.

“We thus find it concerning that the AMA continues to support the use of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to treat gender dysphoria in minors,” the group wrote in a letter to AMA President John Whyte. “The quality of evidence is the same as it is for surgeries: low and very-low quality.”

Marshall expanded on that concern in comments to The Daily Wire:

The American Medical Association has finally admitted what many have warned for years: its recommendations for surgeries on children were not grounded in solid evidence, despite telling doctors and families otherwise. Yet the same weak science underpins puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. You cannot dismiss one intervention as unsupported while continuing to push the rest. When children’s lives and futures are at stake, anything less than full scientific honesty is reckless. The AMA must follow the science completely, not selectively.

Marshall cautioned that inconsistencies in the AMA’s statements could mislead the public and potentially violate Alabama’s consumer protection laws. Those laws make it illegal for an organization to claim that goods or services have uses, benefits, or qualities they do not possess, the letter states.

“We remain concerned that providers, patients, and their families in our States are being confused or misled by the AMA regarding the safety and efficacy of puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones to treat gender dysphoria in minors.

If you agree that there is insufficient evidence to support using surgical interventions to treat gender dysphoria in minors — as your recent statement indicates — we do not understand how you can find that there is sufficient evidence to support using hormonal interventions to treat gender dysphoria in minors.

These interventions have not been shown to be any safer for children than sex-change surgeries are, and in fact may be all the more dangerous precisely because they are viewed as not as serious. But hormones can leave a child sterilized just as surely as surgery can.”

Marshall gave the AMA 30 days to answer questions clarifying its stance on the treatments or face a “formal investigation.”

The letter was joined by attorneys general from Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.
