Unmanned drone boat rescues 2 US crew members after helicopter downed by Iranian drone

U.S. military officials said Tuesday that an unmanned drone boat rescued two crew members aboard a U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter that crashed in the waters nears the Strait of Hormuz, which President Donald Trump said Iranians shot down.

U.S. officials are describing the rescue as the first time that an unmanned surface drone has been used to successfully rescue crew members at sea.

The AH-64 helicopter crashed at 7:33 p.m. EDT on Monday, leaving the pilots in the waters off Oman, according to U.S. Central Command.

"The Soldiers were safely rescued within approximately two hours and are in stable condition," according to a CENTCOM statement.

The Navy surface drone -- described by a U.S. official as looking like a speedboat -- located the two Apache crew members, who were then able to board the vessel, which transported them to another location on that water where they were then hoisted up to a helicopter for further transport, according to a U.S. official.

"The surface drone that assisted in last night's rescue of the Apache crew off the coast of Oman was a U.S. Navy Corsair unmanned surface vessel operated by U.S. 5th Fleet’s Task Force 59. The task force began fielding these drones in theater in late March," said Capt. Tim Hawkins, the spokesman for U.S. Central Command.

Trump said Tuesday afternoon that the military informed him Iran was to blame for the helicopter crash, vowing that the U.S. must "respond to this attack."

ABC News has reached out to the White House on whether the weekslong shaky ceasefire with Iran is now over.

What is Task Force 59?

Task Force 59 operates a variety of autonomous surface drones in the waters of the Middle East, as well as aerial drones. The task force, established in 2021, uses its unmanned drones to provide quick reconnaissance capabilities and integrate artificial intelligence to share with crewed warships operating in the region, according to the Navy.

With not enough manned vessels to maintain a constant awareness of what is going on in the Middle East's waters, the drones enhance the 5th Fleet's capabilities to detect smuggling and Iranian malign activity, Navy officials said.

"For pennies on the dollar we can put unmanned platforms out there, we can couple it with artificial intelligence … and then, I think critically important, we can use our manned ships much more efficiently, much more effectively,” then-5th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Brad Cooper told reporters in October 2022 following a regional exercise to highlight the task force's capabilities. Cooper is now serving as the commander of U.S. Central Command.

The cost for the boat drone used to rescue the Apache crew is estimateed to be about $1.2 million per drone, according to a report from Sacra, a market research firm. That cost is extraordinarily cheap relative to traditional, manned military vessels.

Artificial intelligence is used to analyze patterns of behavior detected by the sensors aboard the drones, which is then shared with commanders and ships operating in the region.

In addition to the Corsair used in the operation, Task Force 59 uses other notable unmanned surface drones including the T-38 Devil Ray and the Sail Drone.

The Devil Ray is a high-speed autonomously operated unmanned surface vessel that is mainly used to gather intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, according to its manufacturer.

In one exercise in 2024, it successfully fired live munitions at a training target.

The Sail Drone looks just like its name implies, it is an autonomous water platform topped by a sail that provides power through wind and solar energy, according to its manufacturer.

A network of Sail Drones can provide a clearer at-sea situational awareness in hostile environments, according to its manufacturer.

JPMorgan to deploy autonomous AI agents this year

JPMorgan Chief Analytics Officer Derek Waldron said the bank plans to deploy more advanced artificial intelligence (AI) agents later this year that will be able to operate autonomously for hours at a time, CNBC reported on Tuesday.

"We've entered now the era of long-running autonomous agents," Waldron said, adding that the technology could eventually operate for days or even weeks without human intervention. He said AI agents are evolving from tools that perform individual tasks into digital workers capable of managing complex workflows across multiple software programs.

JPMorgan said AI is already improving business performance. According to Waldron, AI-powered tools have boosted gross sales in private banking by 20%. At the same time, the bank believes the technology could eventually allow bankers to increase client coverage by as much as 50%. "For enterprises to win with AI, it's not about cutting the maximum number of jobs," he said. "It's all about trying to create a sustainable competitive advantage."

Iran said to deny sending new proposal to US

Iran allegedly denied sending a new peace proposal to the United States, according to the Iranian semi-official Fars News Agency, citing a source close to the country's negotiating team.

Earlier today, various media reports suggested that Tehran sent a draft ceasefire proposal to the US, which Washington allegedly found "acceptable."

In addition, the New York Times also reported previously that US officials believe Iran could agree to suspend uranium enrichment for 15 years as part of a potential nuclear agreement between the two countries.

Russia to block UNSC from taking action against Iran

Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said on Tuesday that Moscow would block the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) from taking any action against Iran within the framework of the sanctions committee.

"Our country will not allow the Council, under the guise of this body, to adopt any decisions that impose restrictions on member states," Nebenzya clarified at a UNSC meeting. The sanctions panel oversees measures against Iran imposed by the UNSC Resolution 1737 in 2006, over failing to halt its nuclear enrichment program.

The envoy declared that Moscow considers the committee ceased to exist in 2015 after the adoption of a new resolution repealing earlier nuclear-related restrictions. He added that the UNSC violated this decision reached after the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, China, and the United States signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to limit Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

UN: Hamas executed dozens of Palestinians in Gaza

The United Nations' Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights claimed on Tuesday that Hamas beat, maimed and publicly executed dozens of Palestinians in Gaza during the military conflict in Israel.

According to the UN report, the military group committed war crimes, which were frequently publicized to instill fear in the population.

"These cases involved executions, kneecapping, bone-breaking with metal pipes or cement bricks, and beatings and were framed by the perpetrators as punishments for alleged collaboration with Israel, looting humanitarian aid, theft, drug-related offenses or affiliations with internal rivals," it was stated in the report.

'Zelensky: Russia may be altering course of drones'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Tuesday that Russia is altering the course of Ukrainian drones through electronic warfare systems, causing them to enter the airspace of neighboring countries.

In a post on X, Zelensky said that when drones appear in the skies over Latvia, Lithuania, or Estonia after Ukrainian strikes, "we understand that the Russians may be altering the course of our drones." He added that such incidents were caused by Russian electronic warfare systems and accused Moscow of seeking to escalate tensions within the European Union.

Zelensky said Ukraine and Estonia signed a joint declaration on security and defense cooperation, including air defense, defense industry cooperation, and the exchange of experience. He added that Kyiv is prepared to share expertise on countering drone threats with European partners and send expert teams under the "Drone Deal" format. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that Russia is in a "situation of failure."
