China halts research said to lead to first gene-edited babies, STAT reports

The Chinese government has halted research that is claimed to have led to the births of the world’s first gene-edited babies, reported STAT. The organizers of an international summit on human genome editing are quoted as stating that they “continue to believe that proceeding with any clinical use of germline editing remains irresponsible at this time,” according to STAT. AP reported that China’s Vice Minister of Science and Technology told a state television network that his ministry is strongly opposed to the efforts that reportedly produced gene-edited twin girls born earlier this month, STAT noted. Crispr Therapeutics (CRSP), Editas Medicine (EDIT) and Intellia Therapeutics (NTLA) are all publicly-traded companies investigating using CRISPR technology for disease treatments
