Trump proposes that U.S. government or insurers cover all costs for IVF

Republican appears to be responding to Democratic criticism over the post-Dobbs challenges now faced by people relying on in vitro fertilization

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday rolled out a new proposal aimed at people relying on in vitro fertilization, as he indicated he would aim to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for that infertility treatment.

His move comes as Democrats have criticized Trump over the challenges faced by IVF doctors and patients in the wake of the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 case that established a constitutional right to an abortion.

"I'm announcing today, in a major statement, that under the Trump administration, your government will pay for - or your insurance company KIE will be mandated to pay for - all costs associated with IVF treatment," Trump said in a speech at a campaign event in the swing state of Michigan.

"We want more babies - to put it very nicely - and for this same reason, we will also allow new parents to deduct major newborn expenses from their taxes," he added.

The Democratic criticisms of Trump tied to IVF have included a statement two weeks ago by a spokesperson for Kamala Harris's presidential campaign, Sarafina Chitika. Chitika said in a news release: "Because of Donald Trump, women relying on IVF are losing their chance to grow their families out of fear the state will take control of their embryos." The release highlighted a New York Times report that said an emerging movement against IVF is driving some doctors and patients in red states to move or destroy frozen embryos.

In his speech on Thursday, Trump said Democrats have ads saying he's against IVF, but he's "totally in favor of it."
