Blast at Tennessee explosives plant leaves multiple dead, others missing

Multiple people died and several others are missing after an explosion at a Middle Tennessee explosives company.

Officials said the explosion happened around 7:45 a.m. CDT on Friday at a building on the Accurate Energetic Systems campus, which is located along the county line in Hickman and Humphreys counties.

Helicopter video from CNN/NewsChannel 5 in Nashville showed smoke, flames, scattered debris and damaged vehicles at the site where the explosion happened. No structures were seen standing at the site.

Doorbell camera footage captured around 7:45 a.m. CDT by Cody Warren in Lobelville, which is located about 20 miles away from the facility, appeared to show the moment the explosion happened. Booms can be heard in the video before the camera shakes. People in the comments of the video said they thought it was an earthquake when they felt the tremors.

Humphreys and Hickman county law enforcement said they are not releasing any specific figures or names at the moment so they can focus on the initial response and notifying families. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis gave a brief update around 11:15 a.m. CDT.

"Very devastating blast, encompassed one whole building that was on the facility," Davis said. "We do have several people at this time that are unaccounted for."

Davis said the scene was secured, saying smaller explosions may be heard through the day. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, ATF and others were brought in to assist in the investigation between Hickman and Humphreys counties.

Authorities were still in the process of notifying families.

According to WSMV4 in Nashville, before the sheriff's update, officials with the Humphreys County Emergency Management Agency initially said at least 19 people are missing, one person possibly died, and multiple others were hospitalized.

According to its website, Accurate Energetic Systems produces and handles "high-quality energetic products" for defense and commercial clients in the mining, oil and construction industries. On its website, it listed products ranging from bulk military explosives to demolition charges.
