The DMV announced Friday it is creating new regulations that will require manufacturers to ensure remote drivers and remote assistants "meet high standards for safety, accountability, and responsiveness."
This regulatory development follows recent incidents involving Alphabet’s Waymo robotaxis, which stalled at various San Francisco intersections during a widespread power outage that affected traffic lights.
The stalled autonomous vehicles created traffic disruptions when they were unable to navigate intersections with non-functioning traffic signals, highlighting potential safety concerns during emergency situations.
