Nvidia Corporation has reached a deal to acquire artificial intelligence accelerator chipmaker startup Groq for $20 billion, CNBC reported on Wednesday, citing Alex Davis, CEO of Disruptive, a growth investment company that invested over half a billion dollars in Groq. According to Davis, Nvidia's acquisition will include all of Groq's assets, but it will not include the startup's developing cloud business.
The AI chip startup was previously valued at $6.9 billion following a September funding round that raised $750 million. The funding round was led by Disruptive, with "significant" investment from BlackRock Inc., Neuberger Berman Group LLC, DTCP, and a US-based West Coast mutual fund manager. Supporters of the funding round also included Samsung Electronics Co. and Cisco Systems, Inc., as well as 1789 Capital, a venture capital company backed by United States President Donald Trump.
Groq later announced that it signed a non-exclusive licensing agreement with Nvidia for the startup's inference technology, but noted that it will continue operating as an independent company.
