OpenAI's compute margin, referring to the share of revenue excluding the costs of running its AI models for paying users, surged around 18 points from the end of last year to 70% in October, The Information reported on Sunday.
According to a person familiar with the matter, the company focused on decreasing server costs earlier this year, particularly when the Chinese DeepSeek AI model came out. In addition, OpenAI's compute margin reportedly rose due to other factors as well, including falling cost of renting computing power, developing more efficient AI models, and rolling out a more expensive subscription tier.
