Venezuelan state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA) reported on Monday that it was hit by a cyberattack aimed at disrupting its operations.
However, the company said that its operations were not affected and continued without disruptions, as the attack only impacted the company's administrative system. PDVSA further stated that this cyberattack is part of the United States' strategy to take control of Venezuela's oil, stressing that it is not the first time Washington has taken such an action. The company "categorically rejects this despicable action orchestrated by foreign interests in collusion with unpatriotic elements seeking to undermine the country's right to sovereign energy development," it said in a statement.
The news comes amid escalating tensions between Caracas and Washington after the US seized a Venezuelan oil tanker.
