Bessent on Greenland: US has to be in control here

 United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that Greenland is critical to the US national security, and that is why the country "has to be in control" there, noting that any new tariffs aim to enhance that security.

"Greenland is essential to US national security. We're building the Golden Dome, the missile system. [US] President [Donald] Trump is being strategic. He is looking beyond this year, he is looking beyond next year, to what could happen in a battle in the Arctic. We're not going to outsource our hemispheric security to other countries," Bessent told CNBC in an interview, adding that the US "has to be in control here."

The secretary also noted that the new tariffs would not violate the trade deal with the bloc, as the agreement has not been finalized.
